I have someone coming round tonight to view my 400D I have for sale. They wanted to know if Id chuck in a lens (HAH) but I did say Id put in the 18-55mm kit lens (which is scratched up) for an extra £25.

Its got me wondering, the 50mm lens arrived today...I may as well say its brand new and arrived today, if they want that instead for £100 Ill buy another myself. But I also have a Sigma AF 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG Macro lens...I can offer them that one too for £125, on the grounds of using the money to a better lens...but Id only want to replace it with something similar (both price and function), is the sigma better than the canon EF-S lenses?

If I sold the 50mm for £100 Id get another and put the £20 profit to a new bag or cleaning kit.

But what would you do if you had the option of getting rid of the sigma for £125 (I think I paid £80 for it 3 years ago) - its an alright lens but tries to do a bit too much, and as a result is pretty soft I find.

Binary Shadow

the EF-S lenses will surely have IS, does your sigma?

zpyder

Nope.

Cameras sold now though, they took the 18-55mm but werent interested in the others, shame. Doesnt stop me from trying to sell the sigma, even if I only get £80 thats half way to the EF-S ones I think?

Binary Shadow

so what are you replacing the 400d with?

zpyder

The 40D body that Kunal had for sale :D Not much of a step up in terms of features I think, but for the price it was one of the cheapest options of getting live view without being a step backwards in terms of image quality. Not to worry, with any luck it will have arrived by/on sat for a jaunt in the NF sunday!

Binary Shadow

good to hear, id be interested in seeing it, iv not seen one of that range before

Main differences.. Its bigger, the buttons are in the wrong place and your zoom doesnt zoom quite as much as it used to!   -)

Binary Shadow

full frame sensor then? does that also mean no pop up flash?

XEntity

Sorry just realised it isnt full frame! I thought the 40 was! Has flash though

Binary Shadow

just checked it out on dpreview, nice, like the extra LCD and the dial on the back

edit: the 40D seems quite a nice bit of kit, changeable focusing screens and probably a better viewfinder than my 450D as well, getting onto professional cameras i guess

XEntity

Very good Camera, Ive had a play with Kunals and its very quick, I can just never find the buttons! Everything is in a different place to the 300/500D

Binary Shadow

Id love something that can focus and shoot more quickly, but from dpreview only 6.5fps? thought it would be like the 1D 10fps my 450D can only do 3.4fps iirc but if its not focused its all for nowt

Serious

The kit lens is usually not very good on Canon cameras, so I would just ditch that in free with the body.

Ive got the 40D and, while it doesnt have the full 35mm sensor of the A1 and 5D versions it is a very good choice.

Aye, they were happy to pay an extra £25 for the lens, which I think is fair given it was 2nd hand and had some scratches on it. With any luck I can pick up one on ebay for maybe £20 or something silly. Why? Ive yet to try the 50mm but the lens is quite recessed into the casing, with the kit lens it was pretty level, which I think might make it more suitable for digiscoping, and Id rather abuse a £20 lens doing that than a £100 lens, even though both are "cheap".
