Why do people sing at concerts?

Surely you pay to hear Steps or whatever and not some fat bird next to your belching out the wrong words to the chorus.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Do you ever sing along to music you listen to?  I do all the time.

BUT, when it comes to concerts, it totally depends on who it is.  Ive seen Eric Clapton, Oasis, Led Zeppelin, Extreme, Stereophonics, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against The Machine to name a few, and sang along to a lot of their songs, you can get away with it without ruining others and your own experience.

Go and see Corinne Bailey Rae, Beverley Craven, Jackson Browne or Engelbert Humperdinck and you may need to think before opening your mouth.

It really depends on the volume levels I guess.

I went to a classical performance of the last night of the proms once, everyone started singing along and waving flags to land of hope and glory. That narked me off a bit as I couldnt give a stuff about British pride, Im sure like most I paid to hear an orchestra perform and not a cacophony of audience operatics.

Because no one wants to be the weird one at the back that appears to be the most miserable person in the world.

I guess it depends what sort of music it is, but of all the bands Ive seen, its not a mellow atmosphere, its all about joining in and having fun.

I certainly wouldnt want to be the grumpy one sat there silently plotting to kill the person next to me, just because they enjoy it in a different way to me

The only gig Ive been to it was loud enough you couldnt hear other people singing, but when the band didnt sing the chorus during one of the songs it was pretty amazing as there was a loud chorus from the audience that you just knew had been going along the whole time but you couldnt hear :D

Singing is one thing, and obviously it depends on the type of concert. However at a lot of rock/metal type concerts theres always one knob head who spends ages waiting to get right up to the crash barrier or stage and then when the band they want to see starts playing they get up as high as they can and then turn around to look at the crowd, usually with exaggerated "conducting" gestures. I assume its something to do with ones ego, i.e they can pretend that the crowd is here for them or that they are somehow the centre of attention.

Although people taking mobile phone shots of the band annoy me. Sure, grab some candid shots of you and your mates for Facebook if you like but anyone with half a brain cell knows that any shots of the stage are going to come out looking like a lot of bright coloured lights smudged onto an inky black background. They are also usually the most likely people to try to draw a halt to proceedings and have a strop when they inevitably lose their phone.
