my launch day xbox has finally kicked the bucket.

It recently started crashing alot a few mins after boot up and I thought before I go and buy a new 250gb one Id open it up and see whats going on in there.

Cleaned all heat sinks and chips and put some artic silver 5 on, bent the x-clamps back abit to put abit more force on the chips then put it all back together and booted up.

Straight to 3 red lights now :( any ideas?

will get a new one tomorrow, will it be easy enough to get my xbox live on the new one and transfer hdd stuff over?

XEntity

Have you tried wrapping it in a towel, makes it get hot and is supposed to get the solder to reflow, to join back the broken joints..

Remove the HD first though! dont want to bork that as well!

I think there are a few guides to fix them as well... Google :)

Bacon

I let my step bro borrow mine and he never brought it back...!

Dont bother with towels or the X-Clamp fix.  Its all temporary.
Replacement is the only true fix.

Its easy to get XBL running, not so easy to transfer stuff from the old HDD.
The easy method is to get hold of a Transfer cable.
A Fakie will do the trick.

Have you heat gunned it before x-clamping?

Binary Shadow

the towl trick must be rubbish, the melting point of solder is so high itd never get hot enough and if it did the cores would be ruined before the board got hot enough

Got my new 250gb one now.

Looks much better and quieter. Ill stick the old one on ebay.

Forget the clamps. Get a bolt kit off ebay (£3) and change it - mine died last week (also launch day) and I did this and its been fine ever since. I have bought a new one so this ones going to my brother now - but its great again!

Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

The CPU can take more heat than the solder. In modern motherboard assembly plants the parts are fixed onto the board then either stuffed into an oven to melt the solder and make the connections or fed through a liquid bath.

its supposed to be something to do with the kind of solder they used, apparently most of the problems are caused when the chip gets too hot and melts the solder  :gag:

A heatgun will usually provide a month or so more out of it, but Ive found its usually putting off the inevitable tbh.

Ive tried clamps and all that, theyre just inexcusably crap hardware versions.
