No more maxtor apperently

Seagate do not rock.  The only reason their drives are quieter than most is because it runs at a lower speed, as any drive speed tester will show.

For me, its all about the WD or Samsung atm.  Samsung usually win due to the drives being damn fast and damn quiet.

Seagate are silly reliable and for me that counts more than speed. Ive had enough of dodgy HDDs. Ill sacrifice 1Mb and second for something reliable.

WD has given me trouble and my new 250Gb Seagate seems a lot faster than the crappy 80Gb WD drive I have thats on its last legs. Pathetic really, Ive only had it a couple of years.

I have four WD here without a prob. 1 maxtor too, still going i might add :shock:

I had maxtors in my xbox, and you could tell the difference when I swapped them to Samsung.  The original 120gb samsung from my xbox is now in my Freeview box and the xbox has a 300gb Samsung.

My pc has 2x200gb and 2x250wds.  Running well and no problem.  I remember shed loads of problems with the earlier WDs.

Seagate for the win! Tho i am running a Western Digital in my computer (Raptor!)

Id use a Raptor, but other WD drives are totally middle of the road.

Ive always been baffled by Maxtors reputation (well at least around here), as Ive never experienced any of the problems people mention and Ive been running a single system with 12 x maxtor drives for several years now - hasnt let me down so far.

Ill be switching to Seagate from now on - mostly down to the 5 yr warranty and the fact that theyre the only ones with a 750Gb drive  Will take me about a year, but Im planning on turning my 3.5tb array into a 9!

Ill have a lot of 300Gb SATA Maxtors up for sale soon (DM10s & Maxlines) if anyones interested

The drives Ive had fail are the ones Ive used the hardest. Big surprise.

difference is that youve just used a few of them - nige will have sold thousands of them - youve had 12 good ones whereas nige will have had to deal with a fair few returns - supposing it was say 1 in 20 that needed returning - plenty of people would still be able to say "Ive had no problem with them & have had a few etc.." but if someone is shipping a whole load of them along with WD, samsungs etc.. and notices a significant difference in the numbers being returned then they are not likely to think to highly of them.

only drives i refuse point blank to touch are Hitachi deskstars, and the seacgate 2.5" drives.  Never had any good experiences with either of them.  Hitachi make some good 2.5" drives, but I still have The Fear from the old days of the 20/30Gb Deathstars (The early Hitachi Deskstars where just rebranded IBM With no modifications) and the Seagate laptop drives that have died on me that afterthat  i took some serious advice and installed a 60Gb 7200RPM Travelstar in a laptop for a mate (same one i have in my Acer and its been flawless).  Ive used a smattering of WD with zero issues, stopped using Seagate when they wound up the prices and dropped the quality.  Maxtor i always liked, not the quietest drive, but before the Raptors and SATA came along they where good fast drives.  Compared to the modern drives they arent anything special, but that said they arent cack either.  Someone up there ^^ Mention Samsung Spinpoint Drives, now i was offered the 40Gb(IIRC) ones at Ã,£22 last year.  Still wasnt cheap enough.  They may have improved lately, but the fact they where always noisier, and never seemed to like any shock always put them out of my selection list.

As Dave pointed out, Ive seen plenty come through Tek in my time.

Maxtors always were the most returned and yes, we did sell more of them than the other brands, but proportionally they were the most returned. I hardly ever recall seeing a Seagate or Samsung returned unless it was DOA after the postie engaged mighty-foot on it.

Western Digitals are a mixed bag, but they dont have any stand out features. I think the fact that Seagate offer a five year warranty speaks for itself on the reliability front for those at least.

YMMV of course, not all batches are bad and no doubt theres plenty of people that have had great experience with one brand over another.

The new IBM/Hitachis are stonking drives and they deserve to have their reputation back. I had two 60GXP Deathstars that packed in but Id consider the latest drives for my next purchase if the Seagates/Sammys wernt so good.

Beaker, Spinpoints are are supposed to be the quietest drives, Im not sure how you thought they were loud unless it was faulty. :?

Current Seagates also offer market leading shock protection IIRC.

thought mine where failing but looks like i need to put that down to a failing psu tbh!!!

scary as it might sound, ive got 4 different model maxtors in this thing, totaling up to about  780 gb raw

think the 80gb might still be flaky but other than that, once id swapped the psu, everything settled down and it was good news allround.



fair enough if theyve the most returned drives, probably one of the main reasons theyve been brought up and out, specially if they fail more often than the others then big names wont use em in their built systems.
