I've just built a Hackintosh (I'm typing on it now!)
Nice bargain basement unit in the shape of an HP-Compaq dx2420.
I'd say it works 95% out of the box, I had to use the iBoot cd and the Multibeast installer, and a retail OSX Snow Leopard DVD.

PC Spec:

Intel Pentium E5200 (2.5Ghz Dual Core)
2Gb DDR2 666mhz Ram
320Gb Sata HDD
ALC 662 Onboard Audio
Intel GMA3100 Graphics
DVD Burner

Networking worked straight away
Sound works if you install universal kext files from mulitbeast.
Graphics can't be installed, so I'm using the safemode driver, no kext's exist for the GMA3100 Desktop Chipset,
so I ordered an Nvidia GT 240 1Gb Palin card, which is on the list of supported cards.

I'm getting random hanging on webpages, which I'm guessing is probably going to be the safemode driver for the graphics card.  We'll see what happens when the GT 240 comes tomorrow.

It's not as quick as I'd thought it would be to be honest.
Although to be fair, I haven't got a graphics card yet that does QE/CI, and I've done no optimisations.

Seems OK though.

DEViANCE

wtf is a Hackintosh and wth would anyone want one?

soopahfly

It's a non-pretentious computer running OS X.

I always thought the OS was the worst part of a mac? Hardware and aesthetics on macs have always been ok.

soopahfly

I *try* and support apple mac's as part of my work, but In honest I've not got a clue about them.
It's easy to build your own, so I'm hardly losing out.

Dave

I had wondered about trying this in the past but I'm too lazy so just ordered a macbook - it lets me sit in starbucks feeling all superior as I drink my fair trade coffee etc...

Tbh.. I do like OSX but don't think I could really replace windows on my main PC.

The OS is the primary part of it and what you can with apps and how they run. Which end up having a lot better UI experience then that over a PC app.
The hardware is nicely built and good tech but of course you pay the price.

Mobile OS everyone has been playing catch up with IOS and that hasn't even got the nicest looking OS, still has the best functionality / stability ratio over the others.

soopahfly

The hardware is just Asus/Foxconn, I don't believe for a minute they put more effort into making Apple gear than they do their own.
All the main difference is is the motherboard, as Apple don't get special CPU's, Memory, etc.

Any high quality motherboard will do the job, the guys on Tonyosx86 seem to prefer gigabyte boards.

I don't agree with iOS functionality, my Android can wipe the floor with it's functionality.
The iPhone is a fashion statement.  It looks nice, but it's too restrictive.

Sam

As an Android developer the iPhone is a far far better phone. But that's because of hardware not because of the os. iOS is a joke in how restrictive it is.

Why is there more app development and a vastly bigger market still on IOS then Android despite Android being in more devices?

soopahfly

Because devs assume that if they are stupid enough to spend that much on a phone, they must have a few quid for apps.   Size of market is no indicatiin of how good something is.

Because there's more money to be made. People who buy iphones are more willing to buy apps. Android users are tight. It's not an indication of how good the underlying OS's are.

Listen I have an ipad and and android phne. And the ipad just annoys me because the OS is so clunky. No proper multitasking for a start.

soopahfly

Hey!

I've bought loads of apps :D
No stupid farty ones or games either.

@sam In my question I did not refer to how good or bad any of the OS's were. I asked a question to someone who has mad apps.

@Sooph, That reply has no base on fact through. Developers are not thinking that.

Android has more market share for OS so you apparently have more options on Android and you do not have to pay the costs you do for Apple.
YET
More Developers still focus on IOS apps and put more focus and effort into the development. The experience to get them, even paying more for them and their use is more appealing to users and they sell more on IOS.

Not many apple users here or people liking them and always see negative for negative sake so I asked the question. If everything was true of what people said on here about apple stuff they would not be doing as they do ^^
Despite more phones and potential more customers you make more money on an app on IOS. Some can moan about it to their hearts content but that is fact.

Hence that question to see what someone who has made android apps thought.
