remote computer access

I'm thinking about putting a computer in the attic that will be on all the time and act as a server and media streamer to my xbox and other computers on the network.

Once it is all setup and running I don't really want to be going up and down the attic to change things on it so is there a way I can control it from one of the computers that are downstairs?

what do you recommend?

what OS are you going to run on it ?

I just use windows remote desktop connection... always worked fine for me :-)

Will prob be win7 ultimate 64bit.

I forgot windows has it built in, I'll see how I get on with that.

if you're going to run windows on it..... remember to restart it once every few weeks.....

it's a pita when a remote computer crashed and you have to go hunting for it to hit the reset button !

If I was to run linux on it would I have issues with my xbox and other windows computers streaming and uploading/downloading from it?

Windows 7 has dlna built in, seems to work well with my tv and running windows 7 pro on my server and 100% uptime not had to do any restarts on it, using both vnc and remote desktop, remote desktop is working well over the network and use vnc remotely from the iPad. Sorry no idea about Linux compatibility...

I use a mix of remote softwares at the moment as I haven't quite decided on one...

PC > PC I use windows RDP
Remote PC > PC I'm using teamviewer at the moment but I prefer logmein
Tablet / Phone > PC using WYSE pocketcloud

MSTSC with Logmein as backup, LMI supports WOL, although i've never used that feature with it.

my PhD supervisor used Logmein for all his remote control needs, had webcams rigged in his lab so he could control the whole thing from home when needed. All he needed was a remote control pair of hands for sample changing.....enter graduate students......

Remote desktop is almost certainly your friend here though, if that doesn't work out there are various free flavours of VNC which work pretty well

I've gone back to using LogMeIn for remote computer > computer and using Splahtop HD on tablet for anywhere to home

I like logmein - works well. But I don't tend to use it anymore. Dynamic DNS and RDP is sooo much nicer

EDIT: That said everything I need is pretty much in the cloud these days....

RDP ?

is it not RDC ? (remote desktop connection)

or is RDP something else ?

Same thing, RDP = Remote Desktop Protocol, RDC = Remote Desktop Connection. Technically RDP is the protocol that runs over port 3389. RDC is the client, i.e. mstsc.exe.
