Quixoticish

Quote from: LokiOK, this is bizarre - earlier today the computer halted on the RAID screen (displays connected drives, after bios screen) . . .

however, just trying things again (seeing as Ive been getting inconsistent errors), it is now installing and behaving normally.

would it be possible that these inconsistencies and errors have are down to insufficient power from the PSU?  300W (Enermax) may sound low by todays standard, but ive never really had a problem, but I did install a Leadtek 6800GT (which requires an extra molex) last month.  this is what it powers:

Abit NF7S v2 motherboard
Athlon XP 2400+
1GB Corsair RAM (2x512MB)
NEC3500 DVD writer
Pioneer 106S DVD reader
Akasa Fan Controller
4x 80mm fans
Audigy Soundcard
Leadtek 6800GT
2x 80GB 8MB PATA drives (with SATA converters)

Perhaps. I had a very similar rig that put quite a hefty strain on my 380W Antec Truepower and caused all sorts of problems from crashing, apparently corrupt windows installations to files randomly vanishing. It eventually went pop with a rather spectacular explosion, and the problems went away as soon as I installed a new 480W Antec PSU.

Cheers Chris, really dont want to spend what little money i have on a PSU, but looks like its gonna have to be done :(

knighty

try unplugging a few things and see if that helps :)

cd drives... leave the side off and disconnect some fans etc...

anything you dont need right away :)

noob

hi folks,.

Ive got exactally the same problem. Freesing mouse and seems to happen more and more. Done a full install of windows and after updating it hapens again. Im thinking its an update or something?

Loki

mine was data corruption I think - when I reinstalled over the installation that was on it, the first time it booted it ran a chkdsk and ive never seen the thing scroll with errors so much

It couldnt have been due to an update, i dont think so anyway . . . if anything it was probably lack of updates since I never installed sp2 and thats all windows update allowed me to download.
