Hello everyone, not been here for a long time!

Im sure a few of you remember me  :w00t:

Would also like to give big thanks to Nige for sorting my account out

So basically, im with orange, had to ditch the box due to low BT speeds, got a netgear dgn1000 and...........

Its rubbish  ::)

So suggestions please, unsure of budget yet as depends if its worth the money.

One of the d-link ones thats cheap has good reviews :)

TIA

I see Draytek recommended a lot, although they are pricey. My connection is rubbish and when I was looking to replace my router a while back the top choices were Draytek, D-Link and Billion I think. As for which specific model depends on your requirements like wifi, gigabit, etc

Rhino

Well the trouble with the netgear is it only has a single antenna!

Would like gbit Ethernet purely for futureproofing, my c200 popcornhour is suppost to support it.

Most important thing is how it handles mulitple connections, I'm getting near zero dl speeds in busy periods!

XEntity

That's probably your exchange/ISP not your router..

Rhino

I do know this, but it is only with torrents :/

Actual dl speeds from websites and speedtests are spot on :/

There are odd times it's ok, I dunno I need a better wireless connection so it's a good excuse :D

Rhino

All downloads are via wired connection btw ;)

knighty

is your upload limited ?

if you max out the upload, you saturate the data stream (can't send replies to say you've received a packet, so the next one can't be sent)

Rhino

Yep always have it limited while downloading mate, all latest stuff installed ect.

Maybe they have worked out how to throttle p2p but just seems odd as I don't overuse it.

Once I got a letter saying I had gone over the peak limit (on unlimited bb lol) as I let my cousin use it for a while. They just slowed the connection at peak times.

Perhaps the exchange is getting overloaded :/

Routers with poor management can top out the max connections if you're using bittorrent lots, it would be handy if you could borrow a friends and see if the connection is the same. Does it drop the connection a lot or is just generally slow?

Rhino

Just slow I guess, it's odd the way it works, I can understand that it will be slower in the evenings, but it's silly slow for BT. I'm talking a few kb's/sec, where it's 800~ out if peak times!

The router has awful reviews, so thought (hoped) it might be something to do with it!

Got to be a draytek 2830n.
I've got a 2820vpn and it's excellent.from a budget point of view, I'd go for a draytek modem and a router from Asus's Rt range.

When I was living at the parents and using torrents a lot I found nearly all the time I was getting very sub par speeds of maybe at most 1/5 of the lines max speed.

Now when I am back occasionally for the night and load up the torrents the speed maxes out the line no problem, leading me to think it was some kind of fair use throttling policy.

You are correct, they cap your line at peak times with orange, but even then I should be able to get fairly good speeds >100kbs.

I can't get my head round it, even at peak I get 5-6mbps on speedtest! And website downloads are ok!
