I have a wee problem.

My laptop acts like a bridge for my main computer to access the internet.

Broadband router -> (Wireless Card -> Crossover Cable) -> Main PC

The stuff in () is the laptop.

Problem is... The laptop now suddenly has random moments where it thinks the Crossover cable is in fact the route out, and it disconnects me from the net for random amounts of time, before flicking back to using the wireless connection.

Now windows doesnt actually lose the wireless connection at all, I can still access my router and ping the entire network ( I have other computers wired to the router) but it seems to think that the internet lies the way of the main PC.

I have no idea why its doing this as well it hasnt done it before. And I havent updated windows in at least 2 weeks (its only happened the last few days).

Any clues as to how I get the damn thing to stop it.

The main pc isnt affected... well it is... but thats only because the following happens.

Main PC Traceroutes google
Packet goes to Laptop...
Laptop sends packet back to Main PC asking to go to google.

lol :D it just bounces between the two of them.

Does it keep popping up a newtwork cable is unpluged or something to that affect? As the last two days both my laptop and main computer are doing this.....

Im not hijacking your thread or anything, but just seems weird. Im with Fast24 (cpbb) like I think you are....and am using a Linksys router...

nope the connection is maintained. and the main pc can even ping and view files and print over to the other computers on the network. its non-local ips that get bounced between the two laptops. Doesnt even get as far as the router.

Aye im with CCPB (AKA FAST24) but I called them up 2 days ago just to confirm that they recieved my cancellation about a month ago and they confirmed that my contract will be terminated on the 1st of june :)

Oh right, different issues then.

Im going to be leaving CPBB as well.

have a check of your routing table and see if an installation has added anything or if you have mistakenly added any routes

cornet

Ive had this recently.

Windows doesnt always tell you when it looses wifi connection - often it renegotiates without telling you. (Check your access point logs)

Windows seems set the default route to the last connection connected - so when the wifi renegotiates it sets the default route to that.

There ought to be a way of telling windows that if the wired lan is connected then to use that as the default route - but ive yet to investigate if thats possible.

Except its not disconnecting, I can still access the rest of the lan over the wifi connection. It just wont send any externally addressed packets out through the network.

Instead it tries sending them over the crossover cable to my main pc.

What does the routing table say?

nothing at the moment as well er my main pc isnt plugged into the laptop. Ive moved my laptop downstairs as I am in the middle of the exam period. Once my exams are over Ill try sorting this out again.
