This is all set before Alien, it's basically the story of how that ship ended up on LV426. I was wondering (worried really) about the whole tech aspect as it does initially look like they are running around much better equipped (which was bound to be a problem with having CGI and such now) but what we have to remember is the Nostromo was a mining ship - this ship exploring and finding the space craft might well be a scientific/military vessel and more likely to have advanced tech. I'm sure there will be a decent way of explaining it anyway, it's not the sort of thing Ridley would overlook.
They tend not to though, It is just evolution of what we have in our time now and the tech to make movies.
10 years ago we would not think we would have something like the ipad so readily available for example and the stuff we will have in 5 years time - OMG!
That and what you can do in movies now means you can just get your vision down more. I bet when he Made Alien he was like - can we o this, can we do hat and they got what they could. He can now get his vision down on paper.
Most directors just avoid the temptation to go back and mess with their old movies, others buy the rights to old movies and do remakes or some directors do their own remake or re-envisioning. One of them (Lucas) decides to constantly mess with his movies.

I guess one way they could get around it all would be to use hyperspace/stasis. IE:

Nostromo was an old, slow ship. The crew were in stasis a long time and it took them ages to get to where they needed to go.
Prometheus is a newer ship. They could conceivably set off later and arrive before the nostromo, = newer kit. With the distances involved the time difference could be years?

In Theory, yeah. The "Find out about their past but .. about their future" bit in the trailer could indicate that. They could find out what went on but due to all the time and travel blow your mind stuff they could actually create the events? Similar stories before but it would be a bloody good plot twist if it was what will happen.

If the alien ship is a different one then perhaps this occurs after the Nostromo but before Resurrection? Ridley travelled a long time in cybernation so it's possible these didn't get any news of the Aliens.

It is also quite possible that the government covered up what the ship was carrying and claimed it was something like terrorist activity. The investigating ship may be from a totally different company or government who have no knowledge of what happened previously except, perhaps, for rumours of something occurring.

Really I don't think there is enough information in the trailer to make a conclusion of any kind. Then again, a trailer is supposed to promote interest, not answer questions!

Clearly we get to see the birth of Aliens, one of even says that the start of something great while looking at goo.
What else going on wise just seems nuts, really can not wait. Why on off has this man not been making more sci fi movies?

Quixoticish

It might still be sh*te, Ridley Scott seems a bit hold and cold. I'm hoping this isn't to Aliens and Blade Runner what Robin Hood is to Gladiator and the Duellists.

I couldn't be arsed to watch the trailer as I'm just going to go all in and watch it at the cinema

Damn, those alien bastards are going to pay for shooting up my ride.

Please be good, please be good, please be good, please be good.

Going off the trailer it should be, but knowing that some trailers look mint yet the films are gash, I'll not make my mind up till I go see it and it can't come quick enough.
