Anyone using whs? What are the benefits / disadvantages?

I haven't personally used the product, but I am very aware of it.

Cheaper Solution to traditional Server OS/Licensing
Has been known to be used in SOHO as an alternative to SBS primarily for that reason.
Can use existing hardware.
Centralised backup for desktops
Media server
Print Sharing
Remote access for Desktop/Files

Negatives
Limited share options
Homegroups Only
Can't be a member server in a domain, let alone a DC. - Standalone Product
10 user Limit
Does not support additional roles.
