I want to get one of these made up: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:10512

but a quick look around online and for something that size is quoted at £40-50 + P&P which seems way too much a small piece of plastic. Is this just how much it costs to get stuff done?

Maybe I'm just being cheap because its essentially a DIY jobby.

I've seen quite cheap 3D printed stuff on Folksy and Etsy, but they were shaped in a way I imagine would have minimised wastage. That design looks like it would require a fairly large initial block of plastic?

It would be a case of the block size and wastage tbh, i'm still waiting for my sub £1000 3D Printed house but i doubt its going to happen.  :dunno: :muttley:

Hmmm wastage. The item is only what... 8cm3 at the most, not exactly a massive block of material.

Is the cheapest one I've seen at $499 but not exactly uber but would do the job for smaller pieces (like what I want :P)

8cm3 is still pretty big IMHO. The things I saw cost about £3 and would have been less than 2cm3

I'm looking forward to a day (if it happens) that 3D printers are actually reasonably affordable at home :D

id worry about item strength on 3d printers. have a look at the stuff done with them & they are usually layered/rigid.
Can always make your own 3d printer cheap enough.
For this thing you want though, My guess is you would be better off making one & for a lot cheaper than £40 - maybe some perspex (cheap enough), melt it to bend & some glue to stick bits together

I went to a 3d printers a while ago to install a mega PC turbo. I was sat by the printers watching them and they are slow, so it's no wonder it's expensive.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.
