I know there's a few of you on here that should know this, is it easy to get freesat HD up and running (with catchup/PVR and all that) from a communal Sky dish?

I have sockets on the wall that look like this, so I'm guessing it must be a dual LNB type deal:

I'm assuming that however the dish is oriented for Sky will also work for freesat, just plug and play? Nothing else needed?

Yeah looking at what you have there, you should be good to go.
What I had freesat HD I just plugged it into the sky minidish and it worked straight away.

Adrock

Yus, freesat will work perfectly with a satellite set up for sky. Just like meta7head said.

Be wary though, if you're not gonna get a freesat receiver then the EPG wont work.

I don't follow what you mean Adrock, isn't a freesat receiver just a box like a Humax, etc? I would need to get seperate box as my TV only has a standard Freeview tuner.

Shakey

I think he means if you try to use a sky box for freesat. You'd get the channels but no EPG. If it's an actual Freesat box you'll be fine.

Cheers guys, any recommendations on the right box? They seem to vary from £100-300 but I don't really know what I'd need or how much I should need to spend.

Basic reqs are HD and maybe recording when there's two programmes on at the same time on different channels, anything beyond that is a bonus I think.

Humax boxes are generally the nuts, and I believe they usually do iPlayer as well.

Edit depending on budget, this looks to be decent bang for buck:

A bit pricy really. Are any of the Humax direct refurb offers worth a punt? http://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/prodCat.asp?cat=factory&type=sat

What's cccam about, Egg, is it just a load of extra channels I'll probably never watch? I don't really want to start subscribing to anything again.

A virtual card slot that can be shared through cyberspace. Just like having your own <insert TV subscription company here> card in the slot.

As for the EPG - lots of cheap chinese boxes cant handle the EPG stream as the EPG is different to how its handled in the larger global market.
I believe Dreambox have now fixed it so they can read UK EPG data streams. The Openbox struggles with EPG.

That would do for now as a billy basic to make sure it all works :) Does it have its own satellite coax cables or will I need them too? £50 delivered?

yeah I'll do that delivered if you send it paypal gift. I'm sure I've got some f-connectors and coax hanging around so I'll make some leads up, how long you want them?

Clock'd 0Ne

Nice one! Deal :ptu: I shouldn't need more than a metre for the cables, my AV unit is right next to the wall socket. :)

soopahfly

You won't get Dave on freesat.
