Well tomorrow is my last day at my current job.

3 and a half years at the same firm, started on a helpdesk/remote service desk, moved onto being a project engineer in the field then spent a year and a half supporting and developing a 'cloud' services platform. I resigned twice before and they managed to convince me to stay.

But that's it, the end this time, start at a new place on Monday as a storage and virtualisation analyst.

Not the most comfortable I have ever been, voluntarily giving up a job that I know and am very good at and leaving a team that have quite some respect for me to go to a new company with new people and be on probation again.

Maybe it is better the devil you know..

I think it's just typical jitters, every so often there comes a point for everyone where they have to move outside of their comfort zone to progress, this is probably your time and all you have to do is shine again at the new place

Good luck fella - you'll soon get comfortable again!!
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

Eggtastico

meh
go contracting.
screw being loyal.

Binary Shadow

Cheers guys.

Contracting is not an option for me as I need the security of a proper job.

Theres no security in any job!

He's right there. Now I'm freelance I'm slowly trying to get myself into a position where I have money coming in regardless from my own side-projects. That's the plan anyway.

Not sure what you mean there.. you can get fired for being rubbish or you can get laid off if times are hard, neither are usually a surprise to the employee and its better than looking for new work every 3-6 months (at least that's how it looks from where I'm sitting).

I think for most people being made redundant does come as quite a nasty shock. While I wasn't laid off as such I was effectively forced out of my previous position (can't afford you, need to cut down your hours, etc), hence decicing to finally go freelance.

Binary Shadow

I guess, only experience I have had of redundancy was months of consultation during which I found a new job.

zpyder

It certainly came as a shock to me!

my last contract lasted 5 years before I left. My current contract has just passed the 2 year mark.
Talk of making it permanent (Public sector), made me talk about walking!

You falling foul of the new tax laws about multiple permanent places of work and all that? Thought IR35 was bad if you were a contractor but this multiple base office bollocks is even screwing me over and im an FTE.
