I tried plex very briefly a while ago, and didn't give it much of a chance in favour of just browsing folders over the network however....

A couple of weeks ago I was at my girlfriends house and she wanted to watch a film on my computer at my house, I though ok I have a VPN setup, I'll see if I can play over that, but turns out there wasn't quite enough bandwidth to sustain it over VPN, I then though back to Plex and it's media streaming ability, installed the server over VPN, installed the client on the laptop, entered a PIN and bam I had full access to all my media, with synopsis and a good quality stream on an n36l micro server.

I also had access to every film on one of my friends servers also via the link feature and this is all remote not sat on a local network!

I now have it on my iPhone, iPad, Samsung TV via app and via DLNA, and various computers.

I can start watching on one device then pick up on another device where I left off, and I get a pretty poster view of my films with zero faff! And I mean zero, I've tried xbmc before and the setup is just frustrating to get it working properly.

Plex maybe doesn't have the same level of customisation and missing some features like dvr, but other than that I'm amazed at how good it is and easy to setup!

I do urge you to give it a try

I run YAMJ on my popcorn hour C-200, but i now have the new A-410 and run their own jukebox, not as good but.....
Can fully control via my iPad, and browse all movies/tv series, it is awesome!

You can use plex with them to afaik, might be worth looking into!

I love my PCH, would never leave it in a box poor thing 

The A-410 is really worth looking into, great bit of kit, and everything appears to work out of the box.

Swapped my C-200 with internal storage for the A-410 and a NAS box, cost a bit but all works brilliantly!

I just installed plex on your recommendation and it looks awesome! Being able to watch my collection from anywhere, on anything would be incredible. Thinking about giving family members access as well. Amazingly simple install.

My initial tests were met with buffering issues but hopefully I can resolve those.

Havent had a look at plex as a front end yet, I'm hesitant to move away from xbmc as I've got it all exactly how I like it but running both is probably unnecessary.

Glad you like it, the font end is a simple install so could just put it on any device, it's about 3 minutes to setup and none of the complication you get with xbmc, obviously there are more limitations though.

I watched a two hour film on my ipad connected to the hotel tv, tethered to my 3G phone and only had two pauses right at the start trying to fill the buffer on default settings.

If you are seeing issues then need to check to see if it's a limitation of the CPU or upload bandwidth on the home network, or download bandwidth on the remote network (assuming you are running remote and not local)

I would probably give one of these two a go but it would mean I end up using my PS3 even less! It's not too bad with Universal Media Server which I'm now running instead of PS3 Media Server. Having said that I guess the PS3 would pick it up via DLNA?

Correct, I'll give it a go later as haven't tried with the ps3 yet, but then it's not really been turned on sine the ps4 which doesn't support DLNA :-(

By the way if you are looking for pure DLNA, my vote would go on Serviio over this, as it's quicker and allows much more customisation and seems to play better than others I've tried, but plex wins overall just due to being able to resume from any device

I got plex server running for the few roku boxes I have, but I just get constant buffering.
Cant really be bothered to piss around. XBMC is solid for my needs.

Tried the ps3 earlier, worked fine over DLNA including streaming stuff from my mates server the other side of the country. I know they list the rokku as supported, waiting for the new google dongle to come out here and see how that fairs :-)

Had more of a play today, annoyingly WDTV Live doesnt has a plex ap (can only do DNLA) so I couldn't get it working at my brother in laws.

Installed plexBMC on my raspberry but as its a 256mb version it wouldn't stream anything.

I've just ordered a NowTV box, hopefully that will provide a slicker solution.

Would be good to know how well it runs and also if it works remote or needs to be on the same network as the server, the samsung tv app unfortunately only works locally, otherwise would give my parents access to my collection.

I thought the Plex hack got closed for the nowTV? if not, let me know how you get on as I had constant buffering on a  nowTV box, Roku box & Roku stick that I tried.

What's your setup with the roku? Roku 1? And what hardware, what size movie? Just want to understand if the issue was plex or roku, as £40 would make the roku a good choice, I could do with one to borrow tbh
