Well, already got a case big enough for a SSI EEB server board and a 1300w PSU with 2 x 8 pin CPU plugs. So all good there.

CPUs - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141961644916?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT, yep, £113 for 2 x 8 core Xeon CPUs

CPU coolers - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/be-quiet!-pure-rock-compact-cpu-cooler-4-heatpipe-120mm-silent-pwm-fan-for-intel-amd-cpus-130w-tdp, two of these

Motherboard - http://www.lambda-tek.com/ASUS-90-MSVDY0-G0EAY20T~sh/B1930941&origin=pricespy, looking at this board as it's a bit more like an end user motherboard as opposed to a featureless server board. It supports crossfire too, something I need having 3 GFX cards in my main PC.

RAM - http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/bls4g3d1609ds1s00ceu - Buy eight of these, four for each CPU as they're both quad channel remember!

All in, comes under £700. If I didn't need crossfire I could save £100 getting the cheaper ASRock board from the review.

Hmm, now to justify buying it.....

is it for mining? Can you work out how quickly you'd earn it back.

Walrusbonzo

Nah. For my main PC. Nothing worth mining with CPUs at the moment.

Nothing, just fancy it for sh*ts and giggles.

Realistically, I'm most likely not going to go ahead with it. I only need to upgrade the CPU in my second PC to something like an i7 4290k and it'll be a good upgrade from the FX 9370 in my current main PC.

With that money I could buy a blistering graphics card setup, if you have an i7 right now you will not need to upgrade for a very long time. I've had my i7 system for years already and the only thing I've had to upgrade is more SSDs and the graphics card.

my nephew built himself a similar system a few weeks back... for a minecraft server    :-[

but... I've been thinking about building one myself for the CCTV at work

planning on an upgrade to IP cameras soon, all the extra cores would help with the video processing/encoding/compression etc...

have 16 analog cameras right now, with digital will have at least 20 at 3megapixel  each... no idea on data throughput but guessing it'll be quite a bit

EDIT: raw data is 2.5tb per camera per week, or 300gig per hour for all cameras together :-o

I bought a i7-4790k in the end, only £200 off Ebay. Just need a better cooler for it, probably going back to watercooling. Then I'll clock the tits off it. Gunning for 5GHz
