Every time I power on my rig the system says it can't find the boot disk. Switch over the Sata cable with a spare and it works fine. One cable has a retaining clip, the other does not, makes no difference.

So far I hav tried three different cable, same issue.

Any ideas?

EDIT: seems to only happen in cold weather

Are you sure it's not just a bearing going or something stopping it spinning up, changing the cable perhaps frees it up?

Otherwise sounds like either a controller or disk dying a death?

Solid state drives don't have bearings, so that wasn't it. I did suspect the controller but it came back up and worked without any issues all day.

I have a tray that allows a pair of 2.5" SSD drives to be put in a single 3.5" bay, seems the power cables were pushing on each other.

Pulled the leads and reconnected the primary drive only. So far no repeat of issue.

Still need access to the other drive but I can hopefully sort that out.
