Im trying to work this out, why if you are disabled do you have a "right" to an job interview when people who arent dont?

Im irritated because I applied for a job and didnt get an interview, I was 5th on the list of the 5 people they wanted to interview.  I know this because my mate works there atm.  However a disabled guy applied and they legally had to interview him, that meant dropping me from the list.  This was for a Network Installer job, you know, crawling around above ceilings, under floors, up and down ladders etc.  I wouldnt be quite so irritated but the guy was in a damn wheelchair!  He was utterly unsuitable for the job because he couldnt walk!  While Im more than happy to see disabled people get back to work if they want I seriously think its stupid that someone who is physically incapable of doing a job _must_ be given an interview when its obvious they cant do the job!

Im _very_ pissed off because it was a Good Job, and one i could do half asleep.

theres no rule saying disabled people must be given an interview, the rules just say you have to give everyone an even chance at every job.

which is balls tbh,

same as any job advert saying "must have experience" are illegal, because that discriminates against people without experience.

Beaker

Disability Discrimination Act says differently.  I know he hasnt got the job as they have grounds to say no, but he still had a right to an interview.  Im sat here fuming.

brummie

if your mate works there, get the disableds addy and go round and give him a kickin. So you dont feel so bad, tie an arm around ya back to even it up a bit.

How about the old strap a bomb to the back of his wheelchair and tell him to run trick?

Serious

He can still crawl adequately :P

There are a number of jobs that some disabled people would find difficult or impossible however I do know of people managing to do a job well that they might never have had the opportunity to try for otherwise, employers look at someones CV and see the disability, not the person, This just equalises up the balance a bit.

I know of a wheelchair bound, black, gay friend-of-a-friend with some pretty big chips on his sholder about getting jobs! (no joke)

ive no problems with it usually, I hired a chef who was wheelchair bound (and he was bloody good).  What im annoyed about id the guy was blatantly taking the piss.  The job description states that the sucessful applicant would be wokring up ladders, and on lifting equipment.  Aparrently i was the only applicant who actually had my tickets for fork lifts, cherrypickers and high lift platforms.   :x

nah think they can still do it atm but is set to change

tis to do with age discrimination

i.e. a big company wants someone with 10 years management experience for a senior position clearly they are discriminating against all the 21 year old recent graduates whod surely be capable of fulfilling the role after studying business studies at the local ex poly/"university" - obviously a young person isnt old enough to have 10 year experience thus it is age discrimination

tis a joke

on the subject of the thread I dont think it is illegal to not give disabled people interviews - though it probably is company policy to *always* give them an interview - if a disabled person doesnt get an interview they can send a load of disability monitoring forms to the firm to fill out etc.. & then go to a tribunal - tis basically less hassle to wheel them in so to speak then fob them off later.

Quixoticish

I noticed this on an application form for a council job at a local library. "If you are disabled in any way, or belong to a minority group we guarantee you an interview".

With the above rant out of the way, I dont believe for one second that minority groupsÃ, cause this - its the namby-pamby liberal do-gooders that are destroying the fabric of society with these stupid gestures.

[clutches left arm] I feel better now...

Dont forget though that a lot of council jobs are in offices, this one it might have been ideal for the wheelchair occupant. Its part of trying to get disabled people off benefits and back into work.

Still no excuse for positive discrimination.

an old mate of mine when for an interview at a library... the guy who was in before him didn;t speak any English at all, had to have an interpreter there to help him in the interview (provided at the councils expense of course).....

now how the hell would he be able to work in a library if he can;t read the names of books ?
