The last time I saw the true horror of modern warfare was during the first gulf war when the BBC telivised the road of death on the news. Real bodies, hanging out of vehicles, burned black give you some insight into what modern war really is. War films dont show you the aftermath either, broken people and broken families.

Nothing can ever truely convey it I would imagine. Platoon has some moments, as do some other films, but none will ever manage to convey it singularly.

They may not convey all the aspects of the reality of war and I doubt very much they ever will, but some previous films have managed to look at some individual aspects & atrocities of war, or look at certain event or series of events in past conflicts.

Enemy At The Gates is a example of a film that imo did a good job of what it set out to do.

One the other end of the spectrum we had holywood jokes like Pearl Harbour.
