He was thinking of getting a Panasonic FZ30 but I pushed him towards getting ...

A Canon 350D.

Why do that when I have a Panasonic FZ20? Well the Canon price difference was nearly double when I got that and dispite being very happy with mine it does have problems with low light use. Under the circumstances I bought mine it was a good option and still is.

Now the 350D has dropped in price and its only Ã,£100 more with stock zoom than the FZ30 :)

Oh and I can borrow it when I need to  :heehaw:

Mongoose

the Canon is a good camera but I would always recomend investigating the alternatives. The Nikon, Pentax and Olympus models are also very good and each beats the Canon in one way or another.

Only the 350D has the CMOS sensor

and for low light usage, itll absolutely kick the crap out of a CCD based camera, id say.

...not that Im biased, oh no...   :P

I dont think ill be buying a CCD sensored camera for a while, next for me will be a larger sensor from Canon..  mind you the cost :( oww..   Im patiently waiting a year or 18 months for whatever replaces the 30D I think :)

Mongoose

Id much rather have Pentax, Nikon or Oly glass in front of a CCD sensor than Canon glass in front of anything TBH. The L series is good, but for the price it really should be and their consumer glass has never been anything special. (not that Im biased either lol)

For really low light shots my Ã,£30 Ricoh KR-5 will knock spots off any DSLR anyway.

I havent had a problem yet with low light, especially as i have a flash :D

I do v.v.v.little low light shooting that does require a flash.

Agree with the lenses, Canon = extortion, on that front!

the consumer stuff is unacceptable to me, so I bought a L lens which cost over a grand  and Im going to get another in the foreseeable future, which is about Ã,£800 / 900

its not half as expensive for someone like my Dad though -he has a collection of canon lenses, and once youve got that, then just replace the bit that hangs off the back of the lens! ;) and your not forking out ridiculous money that often, really.

Arrived this morning, he got a twin Canon lens pack with the external battery pack to go on the bottom so he can use AA rechargeables and Alkaline at a pinch. A 1GB CF card will keep him going for some time.

It definitely has some advantages over mine in low light photography.
