I took these quick (well, 15second exposures) snaps this morning at about 0245.  Can anyone explain the odd lighting in the clouds?

That big building in the second shot happens to be the pfizers plant in Sandwich btw.

Is it the beam from a car, behind the building on the first pic ?

thats a massive section of sky mate, to wide and intense for a car highbeam.

EDIT: Sandwich? hmm, the most plausible answer is sunlight, in some way or another - at midnight, there is some small amount of light to be seen over Manchester at this time of year, it could be that.. or electromagnetic interefence, analogous to the northern lights?  :hunf:

as red said, i dont think anything on the ground could generate that intensity of light over such a wide distance... its very well defined too - youd need a tightly arranged array of powerful lights to cause that - notice there isnt too much cloud to reflect any light from the ground, either...

It looks to me like sunlight - its 2:45am*, sunrise in a few hours, most likely that...

Suns light being relected of a section of sea/ocean (can be many hundreds of miles away over horizon).  Light hits ice crystals in the stratus clouds.  Light effect.

...probably.

Its a 15 second shot and its strong localised light too so it might be a stadium. Taken at 2:45 would mean quite some time until dawn.

if that is stadium lighting, all things taken into consideration, ill show my arse in woolworths window...

Also, as i said, there is still some sunlight at midnight over manchester - a heavily light polluted area, so as you get closer to sunrise the light will get brighter [around the longest day of the year i bet its not totally dark at anytime]. No stadium would have that sort of lighting on at 3am, would they, itd have auxillary lighting on, if anything.

Well, its definately not statium lighting unless you know of an offshore stadium in the English Channel.

The closest thing I can find is something called the False Dawn (or Zodiacal light) where the suns light is reflected off the dust in the solar system.  But all accounts of that (that google can find) say that it is nowhere near as bright as it was on that morning.

Well I noticed it about 30mins before that photo was taken.  And it was like that for probably that much time again afterwards.
