I think thats very true for certain types of individuals, but I do think appealing to the better nature of intelligent people can also work.

Thats arguable, Id have no Muppet in my Elite squad, until he learns discipline leave him in training. Also gobby sh!ts on previous Bad lads army went on to be officers so it worked on him.

arguable?  My Grandfather was a Captain when he left the army in the early 50s.  He always said the officers and NCOs hated having the National Service guys who didnt want to be there because they where more of a problem than they where worthl.

well instead of throwing them in the army, get them digging ditches etc...

ought to get them doing stuff - at least the non murderer/rapist ones - get them doing work in the local areas they committed thier crimes say 3 - 4 days per week & give them a couple of days to study a trade or somethng

make them practise said trade as well.

would make all the roads nice an clean as well when they fup

manual labour to repatriate themselves to society.

They can do the six month training and then go into other areas than front line troops. As has been mentioned digging ditches is one option, reinforcing the sea defences is another. The Themes barrier is going to need replacing with a bigger option sooner rather than later so a lot of them could be put to work on that.

in that case they dont need training except how to use a shovel.  Why waste taxpayers money?

If they brought any form of compulsory national service in they should do it so if you dont complete through laziness you dont get any benefits as a direct result.  Let them be forced to work one way or another.

The training would be purely to get them in shape for the work and give em some discipline.
