Hi All

My uncle recently spent a couple of grand on a new digital camera, god knows what he got, but now my dad wants one too!  I think hes prepared to pay about Ã,£400~Ã,£500, but as Ive not really got much idea when it comes to cameras Im hoping you lot can point me in the right direction.

I know Sony have some new cameras with really good image stabilisation, what are other manufacturers like?

Cheers

Depends on what your dad wants to do. If he is familiar with photography or wants to get into it more than just point and shoot, get a Digital SLR.

Olympus do a nice SLR the E-500 comes with twin lens kit and youll have about Ã,£150ish left over to buy another nice lens for it.

He is familiar with photography, just not all the digitally computery side of it.

SLR, whats that?

SLR= Single Lens Reflex.

Means that the viewfinder and the image sensor use the same lens. When you take the pic, a mirror that was reflecting the image to the viewfinder flaps up, and allows the sensor to be exposed.

Compared to something like a rangefinder, with an SLR, what you see is what you get.

If hes not worried about size and merely wants best possible pics, then a digital SLR is what you want.  Canon, nikon, pentax etc do models in that price range IIRC, you should be able to find some decent comparisons and reviews about the place.
