Im fed up of chasing sensor problems in my Astra, and the tinworm is beginning to set in :(  So ive been looking around at uber cheap cars.

So far the only one to catch my eye is a 1986 Toyota Corolla GT (AE82)
Hmm, Its immaculate and only Ã,£180 with a smidge over 70k on the clock.

Its tempting.

QuoteI bloody hate Vauxhalls

Symptoms:

When rolling, the car idles at 1500rpm
Car jolts when steady on the throttle, and EM light comes on.
When rolling down a hill, EM light comes on and when it comes to idle it dies. Doesnt even think of idling it just keeps dropping off the bottom.
Sometimes reluctant to start.

I know that the engine needs either a new sump and/or gasket, rocker cover gasket and cambox gasket. The car sometimes smells of burning oil but there isnt any smoke so I think its dripping somewhere. When the cars parked up it doesnt leave any fluids on the floor.

Also, when the tank is full and the weather is hot, I can smell petrol inside and around the car, but again its not leaving anything on the floor.

Na, thats not old enough to qualify as a VW for me.

Anyway, thanks to the trust paperclip test, I need the following

73 - Mass air flow temperature Voltage Low
19 - Incorrect Revs per Minute (RPM) signal (crankshaft sensor) Incorrect signal,

Gotta love VX reliability :)

unlucky there Soopah, least it still runs ok so you can get it fixed without losing mobility.

If I had a spare Ã,£180 and a load of garage space, Id buy the AE86 and turn it into an airfield / track car - tis a brilliant wagon for such a thing. mad little 1.6 arent they? 7500rpm and lightweight, with RWD :) must be great fun

youll note that the car probably still drives with them problems snell lol

and yeah some engines are worse than others on failing sensors

altho the 73 sounds more like a connection problem than a faulty sensor

That or a dirty contact or something - sandpaper to the rescue :D

soopahfly

:o No sandpaper to the MAF!
Carb cleaner all the way!

Its been doing the idle thing since I bought the car, I reckon it needs replacing tbh.

Get the Toyota. Itll likely have some issues, as its old, but nothing like the British and French garbage your lot are fond of tootlin about in.

Mate of mine had a 1990 Corrolla 1.6 Gti and it was sweet, except it was rusty as a mini.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.
