Organic electronics sounds pretty interesting tbh.  Ive got to specialize this year in my degree, and Im torn between Aerothermal and Electrical.  Only thing that puts me off electronics is the boring image, and my (probably wrong) preconception that a career in it will lack variety.  Anyone want to convince me otherwise before I commit myself to a lifetime of designing air fresheners?

Out of those two Id pick electronics (obviously ;)).  Youll never be short of work/job offers and if youre good you can pretty much pick your company and go from there.  There are the big names like intel, amd, nvidia, apple, etc who are very keen on solid engineers which is probably what youre thinking of the boring stuff.  you trade doing the boring stuff for living in San Francisco and earning a huge amount of cash.

The other route is the specialist stuff like organic electronics (our group of me and a mate + a few senior people focus on using organic materials as insulators, molecular transistors and are experimenting with DNA as ultra thin wires but theres tons of options).  Its more interesting than the main stream but the money isnt even ballpark the same as general electronics unless you get lucky.  This specialist electronics industry moves so fast and is now so closely woven with physics, chemistry and maths that youre just doing technology.  As a typical day, this morning Ive been in chemistry labs boiling solvents to remove oxygen (chemistry) then the clean room evaporating and patterning gold layers onto semiconductors (semiconductor engineering).  This afternoon Ill be using the contact angle of water droplets on organic layers only 7 atom thick to work out the angle molecules stand up on the surface (physics).  Tomorrow Ill be looking at the atoms themselves using an atomic force microscope (?characterisation?) and then putting mercury droplets onto the top of the layers to make some liquid contact transistors (electronics).

Depends on your outlook really.  Its either boring because its a bit geeky and hard to explain to people who dont do similar things or you might like it if you enjoy picking up lots of skills and taking info from lots of different subjects and topics to help you test things.  Depends on the way your mind works I guess.

You missed travelling to the pub (physics), drinking alcohol (experimental chemistry/biology), falling over on the way home (physics), visiting the hospital for treatment (medical research) and eating a kebab/curry (biological experimentation).

If you get arrested by the police you can add economics to that too ;)
