Itll have fuel injection and the idle speed will not be adjustable, could be a few things, idle control valve, maf sensor, temp sensor, air leak.

which ones the MK4 ?   I think I was thinking its older than it is :(

people talking about power steering locking up..... its not a big deal as long as you dont panic like a fool, Ive driven plenty of times with a snapped power steering belt... just makes steering heavier is all :)   (and thats in fully loaded vans not light little cars :P )

MK4s are the previous generation, 98-05 I think

There might be an idle adjustment, have a look on the throttle body for a screw that pushed against the bit that the accelerator cable goes around.

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

if it has recently been serviced it will most probably be a sensor has failed.

try and limp it to a garage/dealer with a fault code reader as the ECU will have detected the fault, most probably be the crank position sensor or the idle control valve.

Well it had its MOT today and failed. The exhaust emissions was too high which is expected cos the lamp kept appearing every now and again. As for the stalling, thats due to too much carbon around the throttle cap and also the air filter needs a change.

Throttle body cleaner: $2

Yer I really need to know how to fix a car myself. Any good sites? My parents do have an old banger but they still need to use it regularly but when thats no longer required Im hoping to play about with it.
