I converted my car to single speed, but now it wont do more than 40mph  and it uses an awful lot of fuel, which is fine because it saves me moving my left arm. I removed the brakes too, but engine-braking doesnt seem to be enough to prevent close shaves with pedestrians and felines.

No, you need to weld some suitable, very sharp, pointy things to the front and wheels to encourage lazy people to get out the way, its adviseable to fit bullbars and a self cleaning system as some unconsiderate people do have a tendancy to bleed on your bonnet/windscreen ^_^

Edit: nearly forgot you should have removed all but fifth gear to mantain economy and speed.

If you are near Coventry i could have a look at it for you as i have recently had problems with my VW Transporter.

What gears have you actually got? Im guessing its 3rd, 4th and 5th if your lucky? Sounds like the selector bar (the long rod from stick to gears) has twisted a bit or you havent set it right after playing. Just put it into 1st manually and reset the rod. There should be a grove for the nut and bolt that you need to tighten. Its usually at the join under the gear stick.

LOL if your driving in coventry and  only in 3rd gear you will fit right in with the other terrible drivers...
