QuoteThe daily charge for vehicles in carbon emissions band G, which includes some 4x4s, is to rise to Ã,£25 from 2009.

QuoteKens 212% congestion charge hike will hit families hardest

If you thought the mayor of Londons latest proposal to increase the congestion charge from Ã,£8 to Ã,£25 would just hit 4x4 drivers, think again. SMMT has today put together examples of 10 of the family cars ââ,¬â€œ people carriers, estates and family saloons ââ,¬â€œ that will also be liable for this 212 per cent hike in the central London motoring tax.

1. Vauxhall Zafira people carrier (2.0 litre petrol)

2. Renault Espace people carrier (2.0 litre petrol)

3. SEAT Alhambra people carrier (2.0 litre petrol)

4. Jaguar X-Type estate (2.5 litre petrol)

5. Peugeot 407 estate (2.2 litre petrol)

6. Honda Accord estate (2.4 litre petrol)

7. Ford Mondeo estate (2.0 litre petrol)

8. Saab 9-3 estate (2.3 litre petrol)

9. VW Passat saloon (1.8 litre petrol turbo tiptronic)

10. Citroën C5 saloon (3.0 litre petrol)

You might have read that Kens latest wheeze is all about taxing 4x4s, but the truth is very different, said SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan. Families that need people carriers and estate cars, but who already pay the penalty through higher road tax and fuel costs, are set to be hit by the mayors triple whammy. In his war against the affluent, he seems content to ignore this collateral damage to families.

So go for a less polluting family vehicle.

To be honest I think the logic is good - if Mr.London-Once-a-Year gets nailed for Ã,£25 who will care - but it should make a real deterrent for people driving gas-guzzlers into central London on a daily basis.
"Within your 'purview'? Where do you think you are, some f**king regency costume drama? This is a government department, not some f**king Jane f**king Austen novel!"

Pooface

Families generally dont need to drive into central london.
