It pisses me off when stores that are on the fringes of a walkable pedestrian and cycling friendly hood can resurface their 200 car parking lots, but dont put in a place for cyclists to lock up.

My local supermarket, the one Ive been going to for a decade, often five times per week is one of these. Its a corporate thing, so I dont hold it personally against the employees. Theres a cart rack that you can sometimes lock to if its exposed. If not, I take the bike in with me, as theres not a single other thing to lock to outside. Fair enough.

Last night the pole is obscured by a dozen carts, so I take the bike in. Off duty cop stops me. "Cant bring that in" Me: "Uh, been doing this for a decade, nobody minds." she, "I wont let you." So I say, "Well, f*ck me, can you show me where to safely lock outside?" She points at a column thats a meter wide, "Lock it and lean it there." Me, "Youve got to be kidding me!" Her: "You have to leave the store now, or Ill call metro to pick you up." Thats right, she threatened to have me arrested in my local supermarket.

But wait! It gets better. I go outside, move a dozen carts to get to the only secure place to lock up, then go back inside and get stopped again. "You have to surrender your bag." Meaning my small Camelbak. Me, "Uh, no I dont." Her "Im here to enforce policy." I point to a lady with a huge handbag, "Why didnt you take her bag?" Her "thats a purse." Me, "This is my Man Purse, can I get my milk now?" "Sir, you have to leave!" Me, "Can you show me this new policy on paper, or can I speak to a manager?" Her:"If you dont leave now, youre going to jail." Me, "For shopping in my local supermarket?? F**k you ya power mad cnut!" (she was packing a Glock 9mm as an off duty cop) I leave and as Im unlocking my bike shes screaming, "I can have you arrested!" and Im like "For WHAT? For pointing out that youre a Glock packin power mad five foot midget with cock envy? Thatll hold water in court, bitch."

Went to the store up the street, and related the story to the manager who I know casually, and hes like, "WHAT?! You dont do that to family, man. Ive known you for years, aint no time to start strip searching you and stuff." They got a new loyal customer.

I did write corporate about the treatment at the other store, and I was forthright about my sailors mouth, but dammit, itd all be good if they could just have put in a bike rack.

Ive seen bike racks disapearing over the years.  Or in most cases, not more being put in.

Over the years our town centre has seen redevlopment and investment including a mulitmillion pound shopping centre.  The main ring road system has been changed and given an extra lane.  More car parking spaces, etc.

So there are more people coming into the town to do their shopping.  But there are not any more bike racks.  There are only a hand full in the town centre and usually full of bikes.  Id quite happily cycle more, but there are times where there is no where appropriate to lock up.

Even my local shops used to have a bike rack.  It just disappeared when the store chain changed.

Actually, thinking about it, I dont why have never thought to complain about it before.  Its probably becuase I just tend to either walk or drive every where now. :?

I say we all do a mass Tek cycle through the supermarket in protest!
