Righty... I "think" I have dapper installed, at least all of the sources in my sources.lst were listed as dapper. However im sure I had this problem before.

Just changed all the sources to edgy and went to do a dist upgrade and it went through the motions and then told me nothing needed to be updated :|

this is of course after doing a "reload" of the package listing on my computer too.

seems to just not want to upgrade at all.

try sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

it sometimes does slightly different things to apt-get. Also isnt there a command that makes the ubuntu gui updater do the update?

the wiki method just involves the gui updater saying "there is a new version of ubuntu!, go to www.ubuntulinux.com for instructions"

and ubuntu linux instructions just makes that message come up.

aptitude resulted in the same thing.

What 2.6.x kernel are you using? Have you cleared your apt cache?

Think I fooled apt-get into doing something.

Used a different countries sources for my sources.list and it appears to be updating now.

Does it run? Then dont worry about it. Dist-upgrading can result in a few errors here and there as some packages become redundant, etc. Its a bit messy, but usually works.

Biggest problem Ive found is indeed the quality of the package servers.

And what were you doing apting up from the stable version of Ubuntu after your Window megahurtz was stoled?? :shrug: There is no benefit to Edgy or Feisty for the vast majority of machines that are to be doing work, not having speshul effext do uber sh*t.

As it is... now both installs are borked.

Contemplating installing straight edged debian as I can install that over a network without too much hassle. Ubuntu doesnt seem to have a network install which is a rather poor oversight I thinks.

Did you ever delete the "ubuntu-desktop" package along the way? Its the surest way to hose an apt-upgrade as its the necessary metapackage for any new stuff.

Latest Firefox update for Dapper is 1.5, and you can certainly run 2.0 if you wish (I run it from my /home, as Dapper is dependent on 1.5 being installed ) Dapper + backports is stable and nice. Edgy does run fine on my laptop, but other than FF 2.0 being stock, theres no real benefit in my case.

If you install Dapper again, dont forget to add backports:

If you have a fat line and a seperate /home, reinstallation + running EasyUbuntu is pretty quick.

RIghty... well installed the net install of debian. Ubuntu live cd installer is a heap o crap. Everyone ive suggested it to has complained of it just not working. I came to use it for the first time and... pfft.. black screen, couldnt even access an F# terminal.

So im plain debian stable at the moment, may upgrade to testing but for the moment im staying here. Just need to figure out the ATI drivers as the fonts are doing my head in so difficult to read on this screen.
