Its a real HALO suit !

I wonder whether military forces would consider delopying it, or is $2000 per suit too expensive ?

Mongoose

if it really is effective I would have thought two grand was pretty good when you consider the cost of recruiting and training the guy inside, and thats before you start thinking about the public opinion implications if he gets killed.

Russell

$2000 might be rather cheap when you compare it to the cost of body armour as well that the user wont need.  Certainly will be interesting to see if the army picks it up and what theyll do with it.

Rivkid

FCUK ME I WANT ONE!!

Would be great to go Chav Batting!!
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

Binary Shadow

QuoteIt covers everything but the fingertips and the major joints
Pointless then? how useful will you be if your arms and legs are blown off?

Mongoose

ahhh help help, Ive been shot in the fingertip!

Seriously though hitting something man sized in the heat of combat cant be easy, sure I can hit a rabbit in the head from 50 yards 9 times out of 10 but that rabbit isnt shooting at me and neither are his mates. Hitting something elbow sized would be harder still.

Its significantly less pointless than normal bodyarmour which AFAIK doesnt cover your arms, legs and head at all.

All this of course is still assuming that it really is effective.

Poison_UK

Theres a weakness in all bodyarmour...

That suit covers up most areas that they dont currently have true use for..

The Army/Govemont will buy the design and mash it up till its correct I hope :)

Dave

that suit as it is would be pointless tbh...

If the material hes used is better & lighter than what is currently being used then he might have something there that could be developed into some new body armour.

However a robocop type outfit is of no use at all.

care to elaborate on why?

not saying youre wrong btw, just interested in your reasoning

Edd

id see that itd be too bulky for modern combat, which is primarily urban combat in confined spaces, such as iraq

maybe in afghanistan it might have some benefit but considering the amount of gear soliders carry anyway a 18kg suit isnt gonna help matters

Cypher

Quite impressive.  But I cant see it being used by your standard frontline soldier, let alone it being used in Iraq.

Shakey

Maybe not as useful for soldiers in its current form, but for other uses it might be just the thing. Police forces (SWAT and riot police). Bomb disposal units, and probably some uses that are top secret etc. that we dont have a chance of knowing about...

Rivkid

Not every soldier is armed with a gun charging the enemy though. It could be useful for escort roles, or for drivers (esp. those landrovers).

There could be some very good uses.

Dave

might be usefull for police units but it is a bit OTT for soldiers - just too bulky and clumbersome IMO...

Can you imagine wearing all that crap when it is 45 degrees C & youre already carrying a load of other stuff. youre more likely to die from the heat than from carrying all that extra amour to protect yourself from a minor wound.

It is one thing to make compromises to protect your head and torso - but sticking robo cop gear all over your arms and legs is just going to make you sweat like a bitch & restrict your movement.

Someone mentioned escorts - theyve already introduced enhanced bodyarmour for people doing top cover - protects the top part of their arms as well-  any more is a bit OTT - Doing escorts isnt just sitting in a vehicle - youll often need to jump out of the vehicles every few minutes in slow moving traffic & patrol along side them + you need to protect & conduct patrols around whatever location youve dropped your high ranking officer/govt minister/VIP etc.. off at - it isnt easy work - trust me.

Serious

Definitely useful for police, if they are going up against armed criminals it will both save lives and reduce injury. The policeman will feel safer and thus may be less prone to making mistakes and shooting an innocent person.

For military I would say unproven at best. It isnt that heavy so perhaps in some instances it will prove useful. First though you have to get actual soldiers out there and into the armour to try it out. It could theoretically replace both the normal body armour and NBC gear. Probably still needs a bit of work on it.

Desert use could be really problematic but in other situations being fully armoured can be a benefit.

Dave, any idea how much present armour weighs?

The blokes wearing the stormtrooper uniforms complained they were cooking to death in them during desert scenes.
