I have a netgear DG834GT 108mbps (http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834GT.asp) and a Netgear wireless pci card WG311T (http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WG311T.asp)

Problem I have is connection.  I have upgraded firmware on both PCI card and router, but still connection sits at Low or Very Low; occassionally it goes to good for a bit but if you browse internet its still slower than dial-up??  I have WEP setup, although if I switch it off its still as slow.  The PC is a clean install, pretty fast machine, loads of ram etc and is situated about 8 meters away.  When I use the Netgear software to browse for wirless networks its shows mine at 85% but when it makes connection, speed is very slow.  I have a Netgear USB wireless dongle which I have connecting to the router on a different computer (2 metres away); works fine with excellent conneciton. Although if I put it on the other machine, speed is low.  If I try and transfer a file of 300MB between machines, it takes 20-30 minutes.  This is the case even if the Netgear software reports its made a conneciton at 38mbps.  I am totally confused as I thought the PCI would sort out the problem.  I have also set the channel on all different options to try and get a better signal, but totally at a loss.  The walls between the two rooms are partitions.

Any ideas? really pulling my hair out on this one.

bit of a PITA test I know, but have you tried carting the offending machine through and setting it up where the working machine usually sits?

That would answer if its a signal problem to do with the location or some sort of issue with your machine.

Beaker

ive found those little Netgear USB keys to be a bit crap for signal, great in the same room, but once you get half a house away the signal degrades to the point its useless.

Try one of the WUSB-54 Linksys adaptors.  they have a proper antenna fro starters.

Sorry ... the machine in lounge has got usb thingie; signal strength excellent .  Machine in bedroom has PCI wireless card; signal low or very low.  If I take the usb thingie from the lounge pc and put it on the bedroom pc the signal is low or very low.  It seems either location of machine is bad or something is causing some serious interference.  I have also tried moving the router around (within a 2 meter radius) still no joy!

Only thing between lounge and bedroom is our very tiny kitchen, although one wall is a partition the other is solid, although both lounge and bedroom have doors that face each other.

EDIT:  I know its got to be to do with signal as when I originally setup the bedroom pc, I set it up in the lounge with the usb wireless stick and the signal was excellent albeit 2 feet away from router.

Quotesituated about 8 meters away

Get a wire 8m long then

Seriously, I had loads of trouble with wireless, eventually gave up after trying a USB dongle (which was terrible - connection never lasted longer 30mins), then a PCI card (much better, but still the connection was dropped every few hours).

Albeit the router was pants, so that must have been at fault too.

Gone back to wired and Im not going wireless again until its pretty much perfected.

Well, my house purchase is in the final stages now, so should be moving from rented accomodation in the next couple of months ... so will give it another go when I move or hard cable as appropriate.  Just annoying, as you buy this bloody kit for it to work ... not to have to piss about moving machines.  Wireless shmireless!!   :?

shofty

have you tried changing the channel the router is broadcasting on? sounds like a definite SNR issue...

get a copy of network stumbler for a more in depth view of the stats of your (and other) wireless access point.

kitchens often have quite a lot of juice running around, cookers, microwaves etc, could be causing some interferance perhaps?

Id suggest a thumping great high gain ariel but since it sounds like youre moving pretty soon Id just put up with it until you get into your new house and then deal with it (preferably with a good old Cat5e cable).

And after doing absolutely sod all to look into this any further I check the internet yesterday and this morning and I now have a very good signal ... some things are just too weird!!!  Lets just hope it stays like that (well until I move anyway)
