Should the government do more for alternative energy?

Knowing how much that has been spent and wasted on nuclear fission when other alternatves were available should they now put some real backing into alternatives rather than the pittance they are doing ATM?

Investment in r & d of alt energy will come back many fold. Its an investment greenies and crusty conservatives should agree upon.

Dave

tis big business for organised crime at the moment tbh... - lots of money being made in windfarms

Do they have cool gangster names like "Jimmy the Photovoltaic" or "Micky Biomass Corleone"?

Mardoni

Its a difficult trade off imo.

I would like to see the government put more funding into providing home owners with _green grants_. When I finally find a house that I can afford to buy, I will look into all avaliable alt. energy schemes that can be deployed on my property. I expect that my usage outweighs what I could generate but it would help and of course there would be those properties that would have an excess that could be put back onto the grid.

Personally I think it would be great if every building with a south-facing roof was made to fit solar panels. That buildings energy could then be supplimented by the grid. Eventually though, it could be possible that the total number of properties generating energy outweighed the demand.

oh wait, heh...pipe dreams.
But seriously, yes I think more should be done by the government(s) to move away from conventional power and over to renewable, enviromentally sound, sources.

I think ATM either you have to wait for a very well off relative to die or get an incredibly good job. I bought mine when the former happened although I wasnt expecting to get anything.

So far we are trying to get a grant to put cavity wall insulation in.

Mardoni

I am in serious *boom boom tsch* trouble if I decide to wait on a relly passing away. I am from a very young family; Grandparents are mid 70s, parents are mid to late 40s and I am almost 29 :o If I were to wait, I could be 40+ before I buy my own place :o
What really annoys me is that I am paying Ã,£750p/m rent on a flat and although that is a lot of money, a mortgage with the same repayments wouldnt buy me that bin :(

BOT, cavity wall insulation is fantastic. If you havent done so already, I can also recommend insulating the loft and then fitting chipboards over the insulation. I help my grandad do this a couple of years ago and they saw a massive drop in their gas / heating bill !

Serious

The loft is converted into two extra bedrooms and a storage room. Waiting for the government contractors to get in touch ATM. If they dont do so shortly I will be back in contact with them on Monday.

Because we got the timing right we now have so much extra free energy from the wind turbine and the PV solar shingles that im getting paid 100s a month from NIE.

Thats when the grant was 75% of the system - they have been cut back to 50% now, but thats fairly substantial when you think:

(i) I will never have to pay for electricity again
(ii) I will never have to buy heating oil/gas ever again
(iii) I get paid for the surplus

Christopher Monkey

Coolies.... where abouts do you live tho?

In Brum they seem to have fitted a bunch of solar panels on the top of one of their car parks in a covered parking bay style in the open air bit...... i thought it was a genius idea!!

Mark

Live well out from anyone else - nearest neighbour is about a mile and a half away

you mean well paid job

there are plenty of good jobs that arent well paid & there are plenty of well paid jobs that arent very good tbh...
