Ive installed an application called TVersity on my server at home, it allows me to stream DivX/Xvid to my 360. It does this by transcoding the source to WMV and delivering it to the 360.

I have it all setup and working fine but one thing is puzzling me:

When I installed the software, I installed the suggested "all in one" type codec pack. I dont like the one of the decoders its using (xvid3) as it displays a small logo in the bottom centre of the screen from time to time. How do I go about installing a different codec in its place ??

bah :p

I have to say that I am really impressed with it. I have a standalone DivX player and its not a patch on TVeristy transcoding to WMV !

Still, if anyone can explain how to upgrade/change a codec please let me know :)

Shakey

Theres no suck thing as xvid3, the latest is 1.2. Its also opensource and has no such logo.

The only one I can think it might be is 3xiv, in which case uninstall it and download either xvid or ffdshow if you find anything you cant play.

Mardoni

yeah youre right its 3xiv. So I can just replace it like that, it will be ok ?

Shakey

Yup, Id suggest ffdshow, as its a general one and will play pretty much any file.

Codec packs are wrong.
Best to install a codec as & when you need it.

Mardoni

Well I uninstalled the codec pack and stuck ffdshow on...

Now I can play the files locally but the transcoding is completely borked :( Ive spent hours trying to get it working without putting the pack back on but I have had enough :(

Shakey

For the transcoding youll need the wmv transcoder, unfortunately ffdshow is just for decoding stuff.

Mardoni

Isnt WMP a WMV transcoder ?

I thought (probably wrongly) that the codecs decode into direct show, this is then piped into WMP and WMP transcodes to WMV ?

If thats not right, can you suggest a WMV transcoder for me? I have googled but I cannot find the wood for the trees :s

Mardoni

You were quite right. It looks like hte codec pack removed the WMV encoder when I uninstalled it !

I downloaded WMEncoder Series 9 and Im back in the game :) Im now using ffdshow, haali spliter for MKV and the quicktime/real alternatives without a problem :)

Are there codecs for playing DVD ISO files ? I have pretty much my entire DVD collection backed up on this server and itd be great if I could play it. Chances are that my dual xeon 2.4 wont handle the job but Id like to give it a shot if its possible !?

Isnt the best piece of software for streaming xvid/divx to the 360 called Transcode 360 (or something like it??).   I have not heard of TVersity ... can you compare for me??  Cheers

Shakey

For playing ISO files youll probably have to mount them first then play them with an mpeg-2 program. Or you (maybe) could mount them as a network drive and try to fool the 360 into thinking the network drive is actually a dvd drive and play using its built in player.

Transcode (afaik) is a plug in for MCE.

TVersity is a standalone uPNP media server, removing the need for MCE.

Been thinking a bit more around this and I believe that WMV doesnt presently support 5.1(+) surround, so it would be a bit pointless. Perhaps one day, when MS improves WMV :)

Thanks, thats correct ... I setup my friends machine to stream about 4/5 months ago and thought you had some new software which he may not have known about.
