Its the 4L series!

Ive had it a good 9 years I think, bought it for £15 then!! from some one who didnt know about PCs and then got a toner, after the current one ran out and that was under £40!!

Ive just hooked it up and it works pretty much perfectly! It is leaving some smudges on the paper, but they are minimal and I havnt used it in a good 6 months either! Its been in a cold bedroom under a load of junk and it keeps working!

Although it is a little slow

good printers them, my samsung £70 5 years ago printer has started jamming but still prints as good as ever when working properly

I think I will always keep this as a back up, considering as I have got 2 apple laswerjets from my uncles office clearout recently.

Which I think are very similar.

Apple LaserWriter printers where probably canon.  I know the Inkjet series where, because I used to buy canon carts as they where much much cheaper than the apple branded ones.

Im fairly sure some of the laser carts for the Apple Laser writer were similar to that of the HP, but Im also a little usre that the HP laser jet is picked up as  some HP Laser jet ib PCs.

you may find with the early models they are the same, but IIRC the LaserJet 4 series onwards are HPs own design.  Little thing to remember is that if you cant get a HP Laserjet working if you roll in the LJ4 driver itll usually work, they are the grandaddy of the present HP line.  We support a large number of modern laserjet printers running on an NT4 network (customer is tigher than a ducks arse).  The number of times Ive installed LJ4 drivers because they no longer do NT4 drivers amuses me.  You lose some level of functionality, but they will print Black witout an issue.  

Yeah my dad thought the BNC cable that he tore from the walls in my uncles office was worth somthing.    

Is there really any use for BNC cable now-a-days?

Low bandwidth long-distance runs.  You can send it 500m, and if you arent sending anything bandwidth intensive its great.  I can think of one place that they have it run out to the security off at the front gate because it was going to be too expensive to get a new cable+repeaters, or a wireless MWave connection.  All its doing is controlling the gate mechanism and a some images being sent down it when a new security card is made up.

tried that, but the 4050 and 4200 series hate that driver.  We find that the LJ4 drivers are somewhat more useful, especially when you take the fact all the printers are on K+JetDirect cards.

TBH, if there is one thing I have liked about HPs its the drivers & tools avaiable to you on the download & support page which allways makes it easy to setup any HP.  Your bound to find a driver that works.

My old Laserjet III died last year. I had fitted a new fuser and a roller assembly but it still kept munging up the paper, then it when fzzzzt and I threw in the towel. Bought an el cheapo samsung laser printer, itll never hold down my desk in a tornado like the Laserjet III would though.
