bump...

I take it godaddy are still recomended?  What do people think of 123 reg?

Ive got a fun DNS name in mind (quiet cornholio) but I want a small bit of webspace for files and the ability to host a forum.  Maybe a couple of mailboxes.

A bit of fun more than anything.  Any particular packages recommended?

Paulus

Godaddy have been great for me.

When I signed up the control panel was poor but they have tidied it up now and made everything a lot simpler.

Rivkid

godaddy have been superb with me. Signup / get password / login process is a bit lengthy/overcomplicated but the service is A1.
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

godaddy rock.

100% uptime as far as Ive seen.  Supports great, theyre fast and professional and have been for a very long time.

Simply cannot fault them.  They have massive packages for next to nothing and their allowances on space and bandwidth are just insane.

The only downside is the control panel isnt the most intuitive thing in the world if you want to do complex things with domains they dont host etc but everythings there and their help pages and support solve anything thats not obvious.  You can tell theyre good when the biggest niggle is the config pages arent the optimum layout lol.

At first, I saw godaddy in place of the Wowhead site and was all "aaargh, virus scan quick!" but reading this, I might go back there. My ETGS account has been down weeks and nothing has been done over it. Granted, it mostly gets used for image hosting, but given I am in dispute with BT as well over line quality a place with reliable E-Mail may be good too.

Now...about rescuing my domain name from Easyspace registrar...

Oh, and hello

hey - welcome to the forums :)

Yeah I have a feeling godaddy host wowhead.  Seem to remember wowhead having a weird redirection thing when they first launched in protest for allakhazam and thottbot.  Then again godaddy host tons of massive websites so I wouldnt be too suprised if they host thottbot and allakhazam as well really.  They really are a huge hosting company.

If you email most old hosts theyre pretty ok about transferring your domain to you.  There are ways to recover them even if theyre not.

Im currently looking at the Godaddy deals and it seems rather confusing to me. Economy hosting looks good enough for me but it seems if you want a decent E-Mail service, you need to pick up a package along with it. So I added the 5 addresses and 1gig space one. Is that needed?

How would I transfer my old domain to them as well. I cant see an option anywhere before I commit to this.

Arson Wulf

I think I ballsed this up. I cant get Easyspace to point my domain name to the Godaddy servers.

Cypher

Steve can you actually recommend what package I should go for on my needs.  Its the pckages are awfully confusing....

Again, bit of webspace for files and the ability to host a forum. Maybe a couple of mailboxes. 1 Domain.

SteveF

their minimum package was fine for me and most people running a couple of small sites/forums with a few email accounts on each.  The minimum package has huge bandwidth and storage allowances so should be fine for most people.  If you find you do need more space down the line then you can just buy addons.  i.e. a couple of quid for a few gig of extra storage for a year, etc.

The only real choice is between windows or linux (which may be obvious for you or not).  If its not obvious then pick linux.  Just cause their linux hosting let you auto install (and manage updates) for forum software, blogs, photo galleries, etc.

I took the minimum windows package originally.  I decided I wanted to try linux after a couple of months so clicked a transfer hosting button.  2 hours later it was on linux.  A few months later I clikced to buy an extra gig of space as a backup and that was ready the next day.

Arson: yeah the config pages for aiming other domain names at their hosting is far from obvious.  You can do it but it took me a bit of fiddling/trial and error to work it out.  Cba to do it tonight but if you cant work it out over the weekend just spark up a thread somewhere and Ill work out how I did it.  Sure a lot of other people use them and had to work it out too :)

I sent a ticket to support and see what they say. The control panel is definately hard to use though!

EDIT - Sent one off to easyspace too. And then Godaddy reply, then it suddenly works. No idea who fixed it but it works at last! Now to try recover stuff from the old ETGS account...

SteveF

yeah their control panel pretty much assumes you have the domain through them - it isnt obvious to do it the other way.

If you re ever stuck and cba to fiddle with it just email their support and they tend to either justtell you exactly what to do or more usually just fix it for you
