a week or so ago I noticed that after I left my pc on overnight it 1/2 crashes by the morning... what I mean is, when i turn my screen on, the mouse still works, the clock is right, but any porgrams left going are frozen (if there are any).... when I press something / click on something, I get ther timer clock and nothing happens.. it just sits there (mouse still moves around ok)

it wasnt such a big deal so i decided to leave it till I had more time...

then it did it last night while i was using it... but i didnt think much of it...

and now it wont boot :(

goes to the windows loading screen and sticks there... with the ble loading bar doing past forever :(

starting in last known good config didnt make an difference...

if I start in save mode it gets into windows, i click ok to "windos is in safe mode bla bla" then it stops again, mouse works nothing else does :(

any ideas anyone ?

I want to copy stuff off before I format it, theres a good few gig i need to copy off to a networked pc to save it :o

so if anyone knows how to fix it.. do tell

or tell me the new best boot cd to copy stuff off with ?
(all my stuff like that is stored on that pc at the moment!)

(p.s. its raid so no chance of pulling the hd)
(p.p.s. why does this kind of thing always happen when Im sorting out my ntwtork storage so dont have any backups?)

Shakey

Try booting form an ubuntu CD, if it works, then it points to your windows install as being the problem. Also its possible to mount raid arrays in order to get the stuff off of it. If that doesnt work, you may have to find someone with the same raid controller as you in their pc to get the stuff off.

good plen, i knew it was called something like that !

downbloading now :)

(its stored on the pc that crashed)

going at 800k tho, so not a problem :)

Eggtastico

safemode + CTRL+ALT+DELETE & select new tast & manually type in explorer?

Boot from CD, go throgh the install screens then Select "R" rather than commit to a fresh install?  Works fine, though you have to run all your updates again.

hmmm...

well i tried all the safe mode things... tried using system resote via safe mode as per the microsoft web site... but system restore doesent work in safe mode ?

(still freezes in safe more)

tried repairing after booting from the cd... didnt fix it :(

tried installing to another directory on the HD (so id still have all my drivers on there... so i could backup my stuff then format and re-install)

that didnt work :(

tried a USB version of windows... but this m/b wont boot from usb

now when i try to install iy freezer on the "checking hard drive on bla bla bla" bit...

so im installing to an old 10gig HD now.... will whip my data off and go from there :)

(bloody thing!)

i think its a dead m/b :(

wont install to another HD
wont boot from anything
raid array is now apparently "gone"
fan alarm keeps going off even tho fan is fine and belting round (checked another fan too)

anyone have anything to say about the abit kn9sli ?

my brotheres died... and now mine has too, only a few months old :(

whats the chances my raid array will be of with a new m/b or card ?

edit: made a new thread for the m/b

if the chipset is the same then its 90% chance itll work fine.  If its the same motherboard you replace it with then 99% chance itll be ok.  If its a different chipset on another motherboard then its open to chance.  Sometimes they work, other times they dont.  Just remember to get a marker pen and write the numbers on the drives 1st, you wouldnt believe how often people forget to!
