Ã,
I need to upgrade my current system and squeeze the very last out of it.

Heres my current spec:

Abit NF7-S v2.0 AGP (Supports 2 DIMM DDR 400 Max 2Gb)
Athlon XP3000+ @ 43Ã,ºC CM Aero 7+
1Gb PC3200 DDR RAM
Enermax 550W PSU
ATI 9800 Pro (256Mb)

Im thinking of the following cards:

ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB DDR3 VIVO TV-Out/DVI (AGP)

or

NVidia 6800GS Goes Like Hell 512Mb

Memory-wise:

Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX CAS2

Wise choices?  Which card? :)

I dont think your gonna get a good upgrade by installing way faster ram unless your going to seriously overclock it. And you can fit three dimms in mate, i have 3 in mine.

Hmm... arse.

The NF7-2S supports Supports 3x DIMMS DDR 200/266/333 Max 3Gb or 2x DIMM DDR 400 Max 2Gb.

Which is better?  :?:

Which card shall I go for?

Tbh I would consider it to be a bit of a waste of money upgrading that system in the long run (unless you get the stuff cheap second hand).
If you get a new AGP card you will not be able to use it after you upgrade your motherboard and the same with the Ram as AMD is moving over to DDR2 in a few months :(

Well i have 3 dimms @ 400mhz totalling 1536MB (3x512mb) and runs perfect

Dont know about the GFX card TBH. maybe go for the cheaper and save some money for your next upgrade

Will I need to set the timings different for three?  My current timings are tweaked (not overclocked though).

Cheers.  I cant justify Ã,£1400+ for a new board and all the new bits that entails so a Ã,£400 ish spend is more viable for me for the next year or so.

Anyone else want to advise on the cards?

Wheres WalrusBonzo when we need him?...  :(

;)

Just set the timing correct to the lowest rated DIMM. Mine are all the same (crucial). Timings wont be affected by adding the third dimm unless its lower than the other two anyway.

Pfffff... I just dont know what to do... :( :(

madmax

im in the same boat eagle
(a7n8x, 1gb, xp3200, 9700 pro)

im planning on waiting till after summer before i upgrade as much as it pains me, i cant justify spending a boat load on a cpu and GFX card atm.

hopefully once AM2 sockets come out, theyll devalue existing dual core 939s and ill afford one.

needing a pci-e gfx card on the decent boards doesnt help make the upgrade gentle either.

problem with getting those agp cards as mentioned above is theres not many 939 boards with agp slots.

brummie

Im keeping mine and its similar spec for a while yet. Everything runs fine TBH.

If you are wanting to play games how about investing in an xbox or PS2??

I have a PS2 :)

Its all a bit of a come-down though having played Tombraider: Legend on the PC - then seeing it on a cruddy TV... :(

So, its settled:

Gainward BLISS GeForce 6800 GS Goes Like Hell Edition 512MB

and 2x 1Gb RAM (Ive heard two (match paired) will run better than three.

TVM for all your help in lightening my pockets! :D

It might not be a huge upgrade but if your v2.0 board will support 400 fsb I have an XP3200 Barton looking for a home...

Only 200MHz FSB(DDR400) :( Sorry.

Ceathreamhnan

Ahem. That is the 200 MHz bus; they call it 400 fsb because its "double-pumped". After all, Intel are claiming 500+ or something on some of their buses as they move the clock on 4 times for each actual square wave. Obviously in my enthusiasm I had two sets of numbers whirring through my brain....

So if your Abit supports an actual 200 meagerhurtz fsb (which the Abit site says in red the V2.0 does), then itll take the XP3200, which is the fastest Skt A chip if Im right.
I disposed of the only Skt A board I had that would run it, to go Skt 939, and its been sitting on its lonesome since

edit - this is why I said 400 - look at the text here: http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/products.php?categories=1&model=6

The other guys here will back me up (possibly!)

Eagle

Err, yeah - youre right (my brains frazzled at the mo with all this upgrade lark).

Whats its condition?  Used much? How muchy wanty? PM if nec.

Is it unlocked? :)

:)

[edit] I may have to pass:

3000+ = 2.167GHz
3200+ = 2.20GHz

So probably not worth it. :)
