Ive today officially recruited a bassist for my band.

So, including me we have two guitarists, bassist and a singer, just need a drummer and we are sorted.

Got together with the other guitarist tonight and played him some of my stuff, there was a fair bit he thought had some potential for the band.

Hopefully well have our first jam next week with a drum machine.

Things are really looking up.

good luck. its taken me two years to find people with enough enthusiasm for my project. sadly we have a mix match of styles. from grindcore, to progressive metal, to current eletronica to jazz. makes for an interesting gig tbh.

Had first jam session tonight...  Was really hard as absolutely no planning went into it and I hadnt even met the bassist before.  In two hours we only played four songs, 2 of mine and 2 that the other three had in their previous band.

Went for a drink afterwards and reflected on the evening.  It seems we all want the same thing, to have a democratic band where we can all contribute to the song writing and where there is no boundary as to the type of music we do.  Were all quite keen to put the hours in and get songs behind us to start gigging and then record demos.

Im really quite pleased, fingers crossed were on the right track and we can make something of it.  Gigging in and around Leicester in 6 months is a good target :)

Serious

Takes time and patience, something I dont have for learning music.

Im a bit tone deaf too, which doesnt help :D

For your first gig Id recommend getting all your friends and family to come watch you and play the Shed. ITs a good reflection of the UK unsigned scene and will let you know what to expect in terms of audience - basically if you dont ask people to come it will be empty. Also turn up with a mini disk or audio recorder and some audio leads and you can record your first demo straight off the sound board (done that at the shed so I know theyre cool with it)

Heres the kind of sound youll get :

Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

The Shed would be a good choice, the others have played there before too.  Ill listen to the track tonight.

LOL, bassist dropped out after one day, he wants to join a band thats going to gigging ASAP rather than "Start from scratch".

Fair enough, got a new guitarist with about 20 years experience and Ill play bass :)

Twat - hate people like that. Bands are tough but some people want all the fun without putting the effort in. Sadly thats kinda what killed my old band.

whoa, that guy obviously doesnt have what it takes to make a good creative atmosphere. if he left because of that then tbh, good riddance.

willy, scale scales scales :D thatll help get your finger strength up to par :D are you going finger style?

Walrusbonzo

Red.....ATM, Im playing the bass with a pick.  Im going to have to seriously try hard to pick up using fingers as I want to be able to do some proper slap bass stuff.  Finger strength doesnt appear to be an issue with my fret fingers, but certainly my playing fingers are not used to it.

We had our second session last night.  We spent the whole time playing one song, one of the ones we started on during the first session.  It all went really well though, the new guitarist is clearly very good, better than myself.  Song is starting to shape up well and the singer is going to get some vocals sorted now that we more or less have song structure there.  Main thing is, we all really enjoyed playing and having fun.

Think we all agreed that we made a lot more progress with the new guy and myself playing bass.  I guess that last guys musical differences were never going to lend itself very well to a funk/rock/blues/metal/indie band.

thats a massive range to try and cover willy, you should try and narrow down your main "sound" as its pretty definitive when writing, and also the crowd your going to pull.

like if you do a few metal tracks, an then your emo fanbase gets their faces smashed in for dancing at your gig.

as for finger picking, start off on a guitar and build up your strenth. just doing
simple arpeggios making sure to use each finger on each string in succession.

e ------- 2
b ------3 - 3
g ----4------4
d --3---------3
a -2-----------2
e 1-------------1 etc...

after a while you can tremelo like me :D

Main sound quite simply is upbeat classic rock.  Were just going to do a good mixture of other stuff as well.  Well never have any Emo fans though.

My fingers have no problems on a normal guitar, issue is really with the bigger strings on a bass and being able to get the slap sound by pulling on them, its hard to do it fast and fluid.

Walrusbonzo

Its so hard coming up with band names!!!
