Ive been looking for second hand 125s but I cannot find any that are not 6+ years old (~£600-£800). Ive tried the trader, ebay and the local papers. Any other ideas ? I am sure that there are probably bike only publications but I dont know where they are or what they are called :/

Planning on doing mine soonish. Want to get myself a simple  Honda CG125 to potter around on. 60mph is fine for me... and theyre like tanks :D

Just passed my Motorbike Theory Test. Tbh I dont know what all these kids moan about, it was pretty easy

lol.

I got 33/35 and 64/75, w/ 9/10 on the double clip. I was pretty pleased with that :)

Ive still got to decide whether to go DAS or not and whether to do intensive or not...at least part 1 is complete :o

Another option is to get a decent bike that you plan on keeping after you pass your DAS and have it restricted with a 33bhp restriction kit.

I did this with a Suzuki Bandit 400 (import) and it worked great. I didnt do a DAS as I was too young, just waited out my 2 years. I had the restriction kit quietly taken out when i felt confident enough with the bike and the 33bhp.
Restriction kits tend to cost around £120 fitted which might work out cheaper than buying and selling then buying another.

Just an idea.

I wouldnt stick with a 125 tbh, just got no power for you to overtake or get you out of a situation. I would agree with sexytw and get a decent bike and get it restricted, then as you feel more comfortable with the bike and its weight you can un-restrict it and get the most out of it.

Some bikes restrict better than others, singles and v-twins generally restrict better because all their power is low down the rev counter so you dont really notice the difference (its why I went for my SV in the end)

Other option is just get a 400/500/600/650 as your first bike and just take it easy, your be surprised how quickly you get used to it... I wouldnt go any higher tho, they introduced the tier system in the licence because as said above somewhere too many people were passing their test and jumping straight onto 900+ super bikes and killing themselves.

Yeah Im getting the feeling from the few rides out that I have had on a 125 that it will get boring/limiting very quickly.

Im going to find out some prices for DAS lessons and intensive courses.

Mardoni

Well, Ive started lessons instead of doing an intensive course. I think its the right thing to do as I have 0 road experience.

Ive also just bought a second hand 2007 CBR125 (for £1600 instead of £2500 new). Its got just over 2k on the clock and is only 8 months old !

So I can now go and play in the road :o

madmax

Congrats, get a year of the 125 under your belt and youll be a much better ride for learning from any slight mistakes youll have.
Pretty sure this still applies, if you pass your full bike test (not DAS, the 33bhp one) then after two years its automatically upgraded to full power licence anyway.

if you was like me, youll get sick of the lack of grunt after your first year. (was ridden all year round though so played into it a lot.)

I went 125 > 250 (hornet 250) > CBR 600,
been riding just over 7 years now :-o
(and thinking about a 954 fireblade   )

Mardoni

Yeap youre quite right about the restricted license/2 year period when you do your test on < 450cc.

This little CBR is a damn sight more pokey than the CG125 I was learning on, its taken a little getting used to :)

Serious

Beginners bikes are restricted to a minimum performance level, once you take the restrictions off though they tend to go a bit faster.

Second hand is always a lot cheaper as you dont have the markups for it being sold new. Usually there isnt much difference, if any, otherwise. 2K will have barely run it in.

Mardoni

This is a manufactured 125, its not restricted. To get anything more out of it Id have to upgrade the entire bike and get the engine re bored.

Even so, its a great little learner :)
