Go here  and have some lessons, they will provide kit, usually in with the cost (except a jacket/trousers/gloves/hat)

Have a few lessons so you can toe/heel edge, turn, stop, get up when you fall over, get on a drag lift

Then go to a resort for a long weekend and rent kit for a couple days to see if you can hack powder, cus its tottally different to dry!

Then, if you really like it and you have the cash to go to a resort at least once a year buy your own kit!

I did hear that it is quite good to learn on a dry slope as you are less likely to get away with bad form.

Unfortunately I only Ski so dont know too much about snow boarding except for having a couple of lessons a few years back (tis easier to learn than skiing IMO).

prob best to ask instructors at your local dry ski slope about where to get cheap kit etc..

Skiing for me was much easier for me!!
