Title: Lake District Photos
Post by: zpyder on May 04, 2009, 10:13:10 AM
A few photos from the week. I ended up juggling my 400d and my small compact dependent on weather and where we were, didnt fancy carrying it all the way up Scafell Pike. It also only really properly rained on the last day too, though it was largely overcast when we were out :|

View from the cottage, looking at Helm Crag.

View from Helm Crag, with my friend in the way & posing:

He was also in the way on this one on the way down, but I ended up photoshopping him out:

On the way up to Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England. Taking a breather looking down at the Wast Water.

Nearly at the top, looking at Styhead Tarn. I have a series of photos of the same place as the clouds rolled in for a while. Starts off nice and clear and eventually it gets to the point where you can only see about 30ft in front of the camera:

On the summit Cairn.

The view from the top whilst taking a break:

Getting a little artsy. I had intended to try the focus thing in hugin, but I moved a little too much for it to work.

Waterfall up on the way to Easedale Tarn on the last day:

And the Tarn:

Hopefully the photos will work, if not they can all be found in the set here:

Hehe yeah. I am tempted to frame one of the photos and whack it on the wall. When up in Keswick there was someone selling photos which were actually worse than mine (Something I thought impossible) for ~£50 each, so I figure some of my faves cant be that bad.

#3 is looking down from Helm Crag, and I think the ridge in the middle leads on to Helvellyn, Englands 3rd highest peak. When I return to the lakes I will probably try to do it from the cottage if I stay there again, as its literally on the back door.

The challenge for #3 is to find the place my friend was photoshopped out of. Find the football so to speak :D

I have seen the same in Bristol for things like postcards, some are shockingly bad and I know I have photos which are a lot better, just a shame the margin in postcards is so small otherwise Id consider selling some! Thinking about ebaying some on to canvas, but get the canvas company to drop ship for me, so I would have virtually nil costs. :)

Hehe Ive got 2 versions of the photo, one avec friend, and one sans friend. Hes welcome to the one with him in. Its no different to airbrushing out a spot on a self portrait :P I couldnt get him out of the way as he was too far away. But in general on the trip if we were taking photos wed ask the other to get out of the way if we didnt want the person in it. I hate having my photo taken, so with the exception of a couple of posing looking at the camera photos, the rest he took on the sly deliberately to wind me up, but as I cant see my face, I think theyre ok.

At the end of the day if I wanted to frame a scenic picture of the lakes, I want to use a picture of the scenery, not a picture of my friend in the middle looking like a gimp ;)

I was extremely tempted to add a witty comment here, but resisted. Be thankful.

looks like you got on ok with the photo stitching Zpyder, well done. There does seem to be something a bit wierd going on with the hedge to the right of the first picture, probably a knackered control point.

Still, looking good! Im certainly jealous of the hiking you got to do!

Yeah, I noticed that. Not sure if it is the control points, or whether I was a bit over zealous with the panoramics and was moving the camera as I took the photos :D

Still not really had a play with hugin. One photo I did made use of 3 rows of images, and it had a hissy fit, so I spent a few hours putting 10 control points for each image pair in 40 odd images. The result was quite good. Its definitely something I want to play with more, I really want to try and figure out just what exactly happens when you click somewhere on the preview image, as the results seem to be almost random hehe!

Cheers for the suggestion for hugin. Now I just need to get over the panoramic addiction so I take more normal aspect photos for conventional uses!

What did you use to stitch them? Hugin  (http://hugin.sourceforge.net/)?

9/10 times it just seemed to do it all for you. You choose pictures. Then click align, and after a bit it shows you the preview. If it looks alright, you click the last button/create the image. The preview sometimes has rough joins, which normally are blended out in the final piece.

Sometimes an image or two might not be quite right so you can deselect it in the preview and then "re-fit" it and see if it makes much of a difference, often it does.

Out of about 20 odd panoramas, I only needed to add manual control points to 1 of them, as I had 4 rows of images and it didnt like that.

As to the cottaging references, you wouldnt be the first Pete hah. Just because it was a cottage, and not camping...

You should try autostitch that I posted in the stitch thread, you point it at the photos and it does the stitch.  The only settings you need to worry about are output size and JPG quality.  Memory size is merely the size of the chunk of data it will process at a time.
