My very old camera would not work, was dead as a doornail yesterday just would crash and lock up

But i got no idea whats good and not so maybe you experts can help
Im in the same boat.
The IXUS 75 has caught my eye: http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/534560/art/canon/digital-ixus-75-in-black.html
Casios are fricking awesome.
Id watch it with the S series though, theyre tiny but ive heard the pics arent quite as nice looking as the ones from the larger models. If you really dont want to be carrying the admittedly already quite small z850 or similar, its probably a good bet though.
Oh and a friend of mine has that ixus i think. Its a nice camera, loads of silly features like tilt switches etc and funny ipod-like scroll wheels, but its a bit bigger than the casio i think.

Canon Powershot SD40
Nikon Coolpix S9
Sony Cybershot T10
Casio Exilim EX-Z700
Canon Powershot SD700 IS
Casio Exilim EX-Z1000
Sony Cybershot W50
I can VERY highly recommend the Sony cybershot range. I have the DSCW70 and Simmons has the W80. Have tested the exilims and the Nikon on that list and parents have a higher end Canon powershot and the Sony cybershots are the nicest.
Best camera Ive ever owned but nowhere near the most expensive. I probably use it for 99% of all my photos with maybe 1% being my digital SLR when I want to get really fancy and take my time over a shot. For almost everything else its more than good enough and just having it with you all the time and working flawlessly in all light conditions really makes the difference. My older Nikon coolpix and several other ultra compacts Ive used really struggle in low light conditions or have problems focusing in ultra bright conditions.
Most impressively its survived both mine and Simmons lifestyles totally unscathed - which isnt bad when you consider how often our lot are out drinking/rock clubs or throwing ourselves off mountain bikes, out camping or smacking each other about. In the same conditions, my iPod lasted about a month of pocket abuse before being scratched to hell. My Sony Ericsson mobile (got at the same time) has lost just about all the paint from pocket abuse but the camera is nearly unscathed. When its not in my pocket its in the bottom of my bag which Im not immensely careful with. The same bag has been the death of a Dell laptop and an apple iBook so this thing is tough.
Picture quality is great, no fringing or purple stuff round the edges. The point and click auto settings are pretty much always spot on what you want but you can set it manually.
It does reasonable video which you may remember from filming people playing bongos at the last party in Leicester. Screen is bright and clear and the battery lasts for ages even when looking through hundreds of photos and watching video back.
The only down side really is the red eye reduction doesnt work amazingly so some photos you still get red eye in dark shots (easily corrected in any photo package).
Went for the Casio Exilim EX-Z1050 in blue apperently better up on the images like the one I was looking for but still slim
ouch, 10mp :o noise central. really dont understand the mp obsession, my 7.2mp cam takes pics arguably better than the 8mp version :S
I totally agree, there is no need for more than about 5 or 6 at the outside in a compact. The lenses simply arent up to the task and noise just gets silly.
I must admit my 7.x MP is bordering on overkill. Around 5MP is about the limit. 7MP makes cropping a bit easier but beyond that I just cant see the point on a non SLR/big lens.
I do agree but there is a number of settings and resolutions and you can tune it down, got it becuase it is same as the one i was looking at but has better image quality and buttons over it and some other features
Will let you all know how it is
What do people think of the new panasonic lumix range?
10X Optical Zoom & 28 mil lennse..... I am told that is really good? 7.2 Megapixel CCD.

First small cmaera that has caught my eye which Isnt a canon.
Cypher, as with everything in compact cameras there are compromises with the Lumix range. Basically they are good cameras but can suffer a bit from noise, especially with the higher megapixel versions. When you get to 10x you really need good glass that lets lots of light through, with a compact you are always going to be loosing something.
Have a look around for the TZ2 version, it has less pixels but should be cheaper, mostly you wont notice the difference.

Worth reading before you buy. If you cant be bothered to read all of it just read the points and conclusion on the last page. Also note that its a professional writing, in many instances its hard to spot what they are going on about if you dont know, the image might appear perfectly acceptable to you but they are working on a very tight grading.

looks good, Leica demonstrate that 10x optical zoom with good quality IS possible if you know what you are doing. Shame that Panasonic seem to have responded to the critisism of the older Lumixs being too noisy by pushing the NR through the roof. Still the comparison to that Casio seemed very favourable.
