Title: Photo competition: Experimental
Post by: XEntity on July 05, 2010, 22:38:46 PM
Please vote against the following brief set by Zpyder:

To define "Experimental" in terms for this competition:

Unconventional photos, be it a different technique or subject, the aim of this theme is to get everyone trying something new. For some members it might just actually be entering a photo which is new, but for the more photographic members Id like to think they will get creative and try something new!

Id like people to consider the whole photo and the process involved to get it when voting too. A photo might look really good, but in terms of how experimental the photographer got with it, it might be quite basic. Obviously though, the best looking photo that uses the most experimental method etc should win.

Things I am thinking/hoping people with think of: Light painting, different materials (reflections/lenses etc), post processing (if its allowed?), abstract (but not just macros of keyboards etc!)

Things I am hoping wont be submitted, as theyre just too easy...high-speed shots freeze framing things like water droplets or things in flight etc, macros of day to day items, they may look funky, but its hardly experimental.

EDIT:

Voting starts on the 5th and closes at the end of the 11th July (I have shifted the dates by a day as the vote was started late)

Tbh dont vote for mine, A: the wrong image is up, that was an example I put up, but I took that some years ago, and B: the image I took for the compo failed royally so I have bowed out of this round!

It was a tough one I found, as I really liked a lot of these images, Xenity pipped it though on the grounds of it looking like a mini world n all.

Close joint second though was Dave, I really like the expression on the face, Serious as I think its a great image for a wallpaper, and for some reason Soopahs as I find the clarity slightly unusual for some reason.

Cheers :) - though Im not sure Id want anyone to vote for it based on the expression of her face etc... I positioned her under the light, but she did the posing and I captured what I liked etc... was basically experimental because its a portrait taken with just the use of ambient light from a lamppost & Ive never tried taking a portrait type shot before/am a beginner.

It was a tough one, Im a little unhappy my other idea didnt work, which would have been strictly photography and no photshop... I was going to use a piece of glass with water drops on it, then a face below it (out of focus) but in each drop the face would be in focus, but couldnt get the roundness in the drops to refract the light correctly, they were too shallow :(

Toms was a good idea, shame you didnt get round to giving it another go! Petes photo still makes me laugh, love the silhouette on bears, it reminds me of one I have seen before. Binary Shadows was a good use of long exposure, just a shame about the leaked light. Daves reminds me of a film trailer (can remember which) or an album cover. Serious I thought the same about a wallpaper. Soopahlys I like the view through the glasses and the bent light/image.

Ethically I cant vote for my own pic so I voted for someone else who I thought deserved a vote.

The expression works with the ambient lighting though, or the lighting works with the expression, if you get my meaning!

Most mirrors are very poorly made, the result would be pretty terrible.

Sorry been a bit slack as I am in the middle of moving house... But time to chose the next subject...

I have decided to chose "Transport" in the widest possible sense of the word, I dont want to limit creativity as I think the experimental topic worked very well and is a tough subject to beat!

So any form of transport is fine from Shoes to space shuttles, doesnt have to be the whole item can be part of it from its workings to the full subject. I want to keep it quite open so everyone will get a chance to take a photo of some sort and allow a variety of photos.

Will set-up a new topic!

Bit of a late entry

Its experimental because i moved the Fire surround and Hearth outside the house, where it goes quite well with the rustic brickwork of my garden wall.
