Title: Reccomend me a decent camera
Post by: funkychicken9000 on April 27, 2006, 23:38:59 PM
I want a new camera, one that will fit in my pocket and is small and lightweight.  Ive struggled to find any roundups etc that compare them, so Im asking for reccomendations so I can go off and find reviews :)

The criteria are:

Ultra-compact.  Ive been looking at stuff like the Casio Exilim Z750, so stuff that size.
5MP minimum
Decent manual functions, exposure/aperture controls etc.
Ã,£200 or less

So any suggestions?  Ive always reccomended the exilims to people and Ive used loads of them, but I wondered if anyone had any suggestions from competitors...

Cheers

Have a look at the Fujifilm FinePix Z1/Z2

Real problem is compact and controls dont usually go together in camera manufacturers minds.

best of luck finding a sub-compact with manual controls. My Lumix FX7 is a superb camera but has no manual override so alas, no good for you.

If youre willing to sacrefice some of the pocketability my Aunt has a 5MP 5x optical zoom Pentax Optio which has Av Tv and M modes. Its not quite as small as the 3x zoom models, but its still smaller than most of the manual capable cameras.

Well its looking like Ill be getting the same as my mate then, a Casio Exilim Z-750.  Its 89 x 58.5 x 22.4 mm and has a fully manual mode.  7.2mp, 2.5" lcd etc etc for around Ã,£180.

In that case have a look at the 850 too (the replacement for the 750).

Its a bit bigger, plus the increase in MP on such a small CCD means it suffers from way more noise than the 750.  Its got a better screen and some other features, but its not worth the extra Ã,£70 IMO.  The 750 with a firmware update should take pics that are as good, and better in some ways.

If you havent bought one yet have a look at the Canon A620. Up to about 3 months ago it was Ã,£250 but Canon have just released the A700 for Ã,£279 ish.

I waited to buy my A620 and have just paid Ã,£187 for it, delivered next day.

Never seen a bad review of it...

im also lookin for a decent cam within the 150 pound range.  so far i can see 3 sony ones that i want but i just need to know if they have exposure, as i want them for when i go clubbing to get some funky ass pics of glow sticks and lasers and lights.  the longer the exposure the better .

mite stretch to the casio one, what exposure time can you have on that ???

plus ive been told that casio are pretty good, as when i asked at the shop, she told me either any sony or casio.

all ideas welcome, just saving up the money at the moment

Z750 is hard to find anywhere now, as its been replaced by the Z850.

Ebuyer have just got the Z750 back in stock for Ã,£190 though, which is quite a good price.  Or pay an extra Ã,£30 for the Z850...

I see it like this.  The Z850 has an extra MP, but the same CCD size.  Hence more noise on pictures.  Also the video mode is completely sh*t, the Z750 thrashes its pants off in that respect.

The Z850 has a brighter screen and longer battery life, but its an extra mm thick.

The Z750 had a tendency to produce quite garish bright pics.  A firmware update fixes this.  The Z850 doesnt have this problem.

Im still deciding which Im going to get.  But Im leaning towards the Z750 as the pics are just as good, and its smaller :)

Providing you dont output at greater than A3 then you wont notice much, if any, difference. A4 and 4MP would do.
