Petrol stations...

Heres a random topic to liven things up a bit.

Say youve just pulled into a petrol station, the layout is a typical one where there are 2 rows with 2 filling stations in each (so technically 8 cars could fill up at a time). In the row of pumps you need the one at the front is empty, but a car is at the one behind. The driver is no where to be seen. You can pull around and park up and fill, or wait for the driver to come back. What do you do?

I myself tend to wait, but its a difficult choice as I am aware of the people (usually) waiting behind me. Sometimes one of them will pull around and park anyway. However I ultimately feel it makes life easier all round. The driver when they get back can move off easily without having to worry about tight spaces (lets face it, they usually are) and everything is then in sync for a time so that the whole row clears in one go.

I mean, Ive seen people come back to their car only to not be able to move due to the queue behind them and the car in front boxing them in, resulting in it holding up the flow even more than had the person waited for the row to clear.

I also saw someone pulling up to the front station the other day reverse into the car behind ><

If im pulling in front of them, usually it means no cars on the otherside of the lane anyway, ive never had an issue of someone squeezing out from behind, but then i dont goto the garage during peak hours.

I do also fillup out in the country garages on the way to mates houses, so again they are quite quiet

Well myself I never leave the car after filling up, I move out and park somewhere else to leave room for others. If I can get to a free spot I go there though.

The pumps here cant be reset until the current amount has been paid for so youre literally making a space for them to move into and then wait.

The whole "synchronised" thing doesnt hold true anyway, because half the people fill to the brim and half put a tenner in.

I move into wherever the next available space is. If people cant manage to pull out around another car they shouldnt be driving in the first place.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo… Again.

Yeah but there simply isnt room on some forecourts, Goblin.

If there is room for other cars to get through, I will pull in front and start filling, if not I wait.

Some garages this neck of the woods are so crammed that for some cars to pull into the front filling stations means their cars are so positioned that other cars cant actually pass by the front (if coming from the corner). Many others the gap between is literally only just wide enough for a normal sized car to pass through, so depending on how close the person pulls in front, and how close the person waiting behind is, its not possible to pull out unless the person behind reverses (during busy times not going to happen), or scraping the sides of the car in front or to the side!

Im kinda surprised by the majority pulling in, I kinda expected the majority to do what I do. I guess a big factor is the size of the stations though I guess. Most of the time when I see someone pull into the bay in front usually the owner of the car behind walks out and back into the car within about 10 secs anyway so its another instance where I feel justified in just waiting. If someone is really in a rush they can pull around me and the parked car and park in the front bay >< OR pull in on the other side and just stretch the line across.

Interesting about filling in the countryside. Down here the country stations seem to be the most expensive. Theres several local ones at about the £1.04 mark, and most country ones I pass are about £1.08 now. There was one petrol station opposite a site I was working last summer which I noticed literally went up 2-5p during the day. Itd be say 97p in the morning when I arrived and as I left itd be £1 ><

unless the forecourt is wide enough to allow the rear car to get past I would wait until the car moved

what puzzles me is why people only go to the pump that is at the same side as the petrol cap, yes its a little more awkward to stretch it across the can but I have never had one not reach and it saves queuing.

Ive had a couple where its only *just* stretched, to the point of the fuel line being taught and having to be slightly stretched/pulled to allow you to get the nozzle in the tank!

because not everyone emptys the nozzle by twisting it after theyve let go of the handle. so last night she who must be obeyed went to one on the wrong side. i got out. dragged the hose over the back of the car, no doubt leaving a few minor scratches in the paint work. went to plug the hose into the fuel filler and got covered in diesel left in the nozzle by the previous user.

thats why i only go to the pump on the same side as the filler cap.

Matt
