For some reason it seems wrong to register a domain that is technically for another country...in this case Columbia. Plus I think if I told people to go to blahblah.co theyd be stood there waiting for me to finish saying the address, or assume I meant co.uk etc.

The longer domain names dont sound right, but some of the shorter ones do, or maybe its just me plum.co coin.co stuff like that, short and makes sense.

I think it will be a while before it takes off, IF it even does, I have 10 preordered but its very likely there will be a lot of swing and a misses in those

I will find out tomorrow morning.

zypyder. They changed it

A number of sites from that country still are .co but they have been re-modelled to .co.com. .co Is being set as the new .com of companies. .co is now for companies.
Overtime this will not be associated with the country but it follows the patter such as .me etc. I love .me as a personal domain for example. That country will also soon switch to .me.com as its native domain.
Pre-registering has been going for a few weeks and here at work and me personally have registered a few already.

Most companies have had notifications about their domain and to pre-register. I would be very suprised if you actually got to process and buy any company based domain. If you read some of the small print in the process you will notice a disclaimer part about cybersquating and that if deemed the domain can be stripped from you.
They have tightened up on all that these days

I think it will make crap all difference to anyone, the same as no one gives a toss about the expensive .tv, .mobi, etc domains.

.tv is slowly building but they have not been successful. .co will be quite big mate. .xxx looks to finally get approval some time this year as well. There is a big push for the seperation and in regard to switching to ip6 as the web is running out of space.

These will have more significance in the near future in terms of search bots and seo to define your content and target audience.

Perhaps, but the average person doesnt give a damn. It offers no easier memorability for any typing a URL. I cant see how unless youre a huge multinational there is going to be no benefit to owning a .co over a .com.

Meh, theres a domain Ive wanted for a while now as its a bit more "professional" than zpyder.co.uk for photos and work/job emails. Problem is a software company has registered half of them and the rest are taken bar .co, cant really justify £30 to register it though when .co.uk costs like £5 for 2 years.

Feck it. Thats what selling tat on ebay is for ><. If said company wants they can ask to buy the domain off of me, I dont care about making a profit, so long as they transfer the .co.uk domain to me, they can have .co and .com if theyre going to be the biggies.

DOUBLE EDIT:
Anyone thought that for web browsers autocomplete functions .co is going to suffer...type website.co and youre probably going to get it trying to take you to website.com ?!

If your only selling in the UK you want a .co.uk otherwise your harming your potential in your local market.

totally disagree, the vast majority of the public are idiots -but anyone doing business really should tag both .co.uk & .com

Agreed. We take plenty of orders from people in the US who dont even realise that .co.uk is a UK based domain name.

Coming back to this, the search engines are not going to suddenly start crapping all over the .co.uk / .com domains because they are not instantly identifiable with the type of business/media you operate within.

It may be beneficial to minor degree for a new website but long established sites using a .com or .co.uk wont suddenly start seeing their rank go down because of a plethora of new domains being available.

Id go so far as to say if I see a company operating under .biz I instantly assume they are a bit of a cowboy outfit in fact, a view not helped by some of our clients opting for such as domain. Its up there with lawyers4u type names
