Its a shame I binned the old Joystick years ago but I used to play MW2 and MW3 with the keyboard and mouse so MW4 shouldnt be an issue. Will dig out the old CDs and the expansion packs and get it installed again.

Well you can, or you could wait a about a week at the outside....

Already have.  Im a huge fan of the Battletech series, and when Jordan Weisman is involved in something then its likely to be awesome.

Hes the inventor of Battletech, and he now owns Smith and Tinker, who are the brains behind the game.  This could be Very Much Fun.  Incidentally, its them that are allowing MekTek to release Mech4 for free!

Bah, I thought that dispute is something that has been going on since Battletech/mechwarriors inception. For some reason the Madcat/timberwolf comes to mind, in terms of claims of the design originally being a robotech one or something?

Ahh, the infamous unseen mechs.

This dispute has been going on for donkeys years. They just dropped the disputed mech designs (they were "phased out") and later they re-introduced them as re-designed updated models that did not infringe copyright any more.

The only problem is many of the disputed "unseen" mechs were pretty iconic designs like the warhammer, battlemaster, archer and marauder amongst others.

The mad cat was never an unseen.

Aha, I was getting confused. I knew that the mechs were some of my faves from MW2:Mercs, like the Marauder I think. I just figured it was the MadCat as its my fave design haha.

Its amazing how much some of those old Macross designs were re-used over the years though. I mean if you look at the Wasp unseen design its clearly the VF-1 thingy from Macross, and it also rather bizarrely ended up being used as the die-cast toy for Jetfire from Transformers even though it looks nothing like him. Lots of the Macross designs also ended up in Robotech as well, and were also used in various model kits that had nothing to do with any of the franchises themselves.

Nah, MekTek have an official understanding with Harmony Gold to allow the release.  Were just being held up with some irritating problems at the moment.  Should be released ASAP.

Problem is when it was first announced that they were going to release mech4 for free everyone got really excited, it spread around the net, everyone started checking MekTek all the time but they took too long, everyone got bored of waiting and its all died down again.

If they had said it and then week later released they would of had so many more people downloading, playing, getting addicted to the online part again.. now they will get only a % of the original group.

MekTek always take a million years to release things after making announcements, its incredibly frustrating.

The problem was that they only knew 1 day before Smith & Tinker announced they would be releasing it for free.  All the work involved to polish it off has been a real pain for the devs.  Ive just been beta testing, and even that has thrown up some odd errors.

its done in their spare time though, without the benefit of the source code.  They have to reverse engineer everything they are doing, then implement changes.  Way harder than working straight form the source.

Im not detracting from their hard work and dedication at all. I just wish theyd stop getting so excited and announcing that things will be released soon(tm), with soon being any time between the next twelve days and the next twelve months.
