Gah, cant for the life of me get W7 to see the XP machine downstairs.

Theyre on the same workgroup, and the XP machine can see the W7 ffs. I need to get them to connect so I can add the printer on this computer :(

Any suggestions?

I am not sure.
I can connect to the one upstairs here and that is XP home. Not had any issues. It is networking so could be one of a gerzillion issues, lol.

Heres one silly little thing that is bugging me; in the start menu/orb thing is there any way to make it default to showing "all programs" the second you click on it? I always disable all of the recently used programs and suchlike as Id sooner just had desktop shortcuts to things I use regularly, so the result is the menu is always completely blank when you open it.

Yeah you can in the properties you can do all sorts.

You do not need the icons on desktop any more, I barely even go to it now so you can keep it clean. With the taskbar pins and the way you can launch programs now you do not need it.

Press apple key, start typing name of program, pops up really fast, press enter.

You should not need the all programs thing.

* I hate the volume control - its steppy when it should be slidey
* I hate window media player, theres too much clicking to get to the volume control. Its ok with a mouse but with a touchpad you have to click, then click and drag the slider which is irritating
* Im kinda used to the taskbar and it works well on a eeepc but on a 22" screen its pointless and annoying to group programs
* I hate the random blue screens
* I really hate the networking bit - I dont want the sharing bit, I just want to see interfaces and have easy access to their properties
* The picture viewer thingy wont open files from the recent docs list for some reason
* I still hate the Vista-style logon screen. I dont want to log in to the domain all the time, sometimes I wanna log in locally so I miss the drop down box
* Why did they move the minimise to the right? I have my show desktop next to the start button on XP - thats where it belongs tbh
* I dont think its as fast as XP.
* I forgot - I get this program isnt responding when really its just having a think because its a slow CPU.

** Just found out my eepc is kinda multi-touch. Hold one finger down and slide the other and it scrolls. Dunno if thats a 7 thing but wooo!

its some kind of software cleverness, Ubuntu 9.04 has done the same thing to all lappys Ive installed it on so far, so Im guessing its in the latest touchpad drivers for both kernels.

I dont get why people are having issues.  Ive been using the Microsoft Partner release since late August and the only issue I have is the occasional lockup of IE8 when opening a new tab, but thats just IE8 being inherently awful.

Other than that, its great.

Would it be responsible for occasionally allowing it to connect and then 5 mins later making it look like the computer never existed?

Nope.

A slidey volume control is way better. Its like a knob is better than those stupid buttons you get on some hifis.
WMP. Bad design - extra clicks.
Taskbar grouping - extra clicks to find something. Bad design. Dont get me started on the lack of quick launch and the pinning stuff. A pinned program opens once and then you lose the pinned icon. Stupid.
Networking bit - extra clicks. Bad design. PITA if youre going from site to site and have to keep changing TCP/IP.
Logon screen - extra typing to do the same thing. Bad design.
Minimize on the right. Which is the opposite side of the screen to the start menu and all the desktop icons. Extra mouse dragging. Bad design.

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

I agree on some of those, disagree on others.

Slidy volume I agree. On a related note its the one thing I hate about my Eclipse keyboard. Touch sensitive volume keys. No tactile feedback, so you end up putting your finger on volume up and nothing happens and then 2 secs later you get deafened. I miss the slidy/spinny volume controls on my old keyboard!

Taskbar can be ungrouped, which was the first thing I did!

Having said about my networking/printer woes, couldnt agree more ><

Logon screen has been disabled for me.

Dont really care about minimise button. I have a 24" widescreen monitor and moving from left-right isnt a big deal, and I dont see how having it on either side is better than the other, just something to get used to.

Quicklaunch wise its not been too bad, Vista got me into the habit of just tapping the win key and then typing the first few letters of what I want to open and wham, sorted. For outlook and firefox I just pinned them, does the job.

There are some reports that upgrades from Vista is causing problems for a number of people, it stops claiming its going to go back to Vista but restarts instead and then does the same again.

Printer drivers are looking like another issue here too as well as some notebooks.
