Windows 7 quirks/niggles etc?
on: October 24, 2009, 15:33:45 PM
I know many here have been using W7 since the public RC, and so probably have gotten used to it etc, but Im just curious how everyone is finding it?

I still find the task bar grouping counter productive (and have disabled it) - coming from vista where Id doubled the taskbar (I tend to have lots of windows open doing lots at once). I like(d) being able to see the titles etc in the program, not just the program.

Other than this, I like that theyve made the sticky notes part of windows, but hate that you cant remove it from the taskbar. I mean, I dont want to run it as an app, I want to add a sticky note "to-do" to my desktop, and leave it till its donje and then delete it. I dont want to have it taking up space at the bottom, considering how large everything seems to be now down there.

But on the plus side I do like how now the "recent programs" list has the feature to open the recently used files for each app :D

* I hate the volume control - its steppy when it should be slidey
* I hate window media player, theres too much clicking to get to the volume control. Its ok with a mouse but with a touchpad you have to click, then click and drag the slider which is irritating
* Im kinda used to the taskbar and it works well on a eeepc but on a 22" screen its pointless and annoying to group programs
* I hate the random blue screens
* I really hate the networking bit - I dont want the sharing bit, I just want to see interfaces and have easy access to their properties
* The picture viewer thingy wont open files from the recent docs list for some reason
* I still hate the Vista-style logon screen. I dont want to log in to the domain all the time, sometimes I wanna log in locally so I miss the drop down box
* Why did they move the minimise to the right? I have my show desktop next to the start button on XP - thats where it belongs tbh
* I dont think its as fast as XP.
* I forgot - I get this program isnt responding when really its just having a think because its a slow CPU.

Good things:

* Boots quickly
* Looks pretty
* Just found out my eepc is kinda multi-touch. Hold one finger down and slide the other and it scrolls. Dunno if thats a 7 thing but wooo!
* The start menu is awesome
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Is there anyway to change the above two?

Windows Wiggle!

If youve got a ton of stuff cluttering up your screen, grab the title bar and shake it like a polaroid picture.
When you want it all back, do the same again.

i think.... making it look winxp (or windows classic as they call it) really makes a big difference...

also, in the preformance bit, i remove everything except for thumbnail icons.... not bothered about all the fade in/out meuns or the transparent bars etc....

oh, and had to add the quick launch bar back in too....

once all that is done, Im set :)

I meant like splitting active programs up from shortcuts like in xp, shortcuts on the left, open windows / browsers in the centre and notifications and active programs on the right

Most pointless hidden feature ever. It takes more effort to do than to just click on the show desktop icon in the bottom right ><

* I hate the volume control - its steppy when it should be slidey

Do not use it. My volume is tied to either my keyboard or the side scroll of my mouse and uses the realtec one, which is great.
I do like the indervidual app volume ability though. Being able to have browser sounds quite low so if you got your volume high after listening to some banging tunes it does not scare the crap out of you is quite handy.

There are shortcuts for volume control you know, just like any app :P

Why you customise it a bit and its great, which of course you can do.

* I hate the random blue screens

Hehe, not crashed once for me yet.

* I really hate the networking bit - I dont want the sharing bit, I just want to see interfaces and have easy access to their properties

Again, with the customisation you can have that, one of the first things I did.
I think it is really good. I could never get my xbox to go online through xp, it never seemed to want to work. Could not get it working through my mac either. Win7 Took 5 minutes and I was shocked! I really was. Did not expect it to work but it did.

The picture viewer thingy wont open files from the recent docs list for some reason

Just checked, does for me, this is a bug with yours somehow?

I still hate the Vista-style logon screen. I dont want to log in to the domain all the time, sometimes I wanna log in locally so I miss the drop down box

You can change all the logon stuff you know.

I am with others, I prefer where it is now. I do not want to accidentally catch it when hovering over my app icons.

* I dont think its as fast as XP.

Something wrong with your install?
windows 7 performs better then snow leopard on a mac. Way faster on my pc then my xp. I sometimes boot xp up and it is certainly a lot slower for me.

My only real issue so fat is the fact you can not drag a file onto a pinned app icon and have it load up. I use vista at work a lot so I feel the difference when at home.

Gah, cant for the life of me get W7 to see the XP machine downstairs.

Theyre on the same workgroup, and the XP machine can see the W7 ffs. I need to get them to connect so I can add the printer on this computer :(

Any suggestions?
